Bryan Kohberger, a former student at Washington State University, has been the subject of multiple complaints regarding his behaviour during his time at the institution. Over a span of just three months, Kohberger faced a total of 13 formal complaints, with accusations ranging from discriminatory comments to inappropriate conduct towards fellow students and staff members.
The complaints lodged against Kohberger highlighted instances where he made offensive and derogatory remarks, including homophobic, ableist, xenophobic, and misogynistic comments. According to one staff member, Kohberger had developed a reputation for being disrespectful towards others, earning him the label of “being a d—” by September of his first semester in the doctoral program in criminology.

Reports from interviews conducted within the WSU community shed light on some of the incidents that led to the formal complaints against Kohberger. Women who made complaints recalled unsettling encounters with him, such as being belittled and subjected to uncomfortable advances. One female student described feeling deeply uncomfortable due to Kohberger’s behaviour, highlighting instances where he spoke condescendingly to women and showed a lack of empathy.
Concerns were not limited to female students, as a male graduate student recounted feeling verbally cornered by Kohberger in a prolonged conversation. The uncomfortable interaction reportedly involved Kohberger boasting about his experiences in bars and clubs, displaying a lack of respect for personal boundaries. Such incidents prompted multiple first-year doctoral students to undergo discrimination training as a response to Kohberger’s behaviour.

Kohberger’s disruptive conduct culminated in a series of tragic events, as he was later found guilty of the murders of four University of Idaho students. In July, he was sentenced to four consecutive life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, along with additional penalties for burglary. The heinous crime, committed in November 2022, sent shockwaves through the academic community and raised questions about the signs of aggression and harassment that went unaddressed.
The case of Bryan Kohberger underscores the importance of addressing and addressing concerning behaviour within educational institutions promptly. Instances of discrimination, harassment, and verbal abuse should not be tolerated, and proper mechanisms for reporting and responding to such issues are crucial in maintaining a safe and respectful academic environment. By holding individuals accountable for their actions, universities can uphold standards of integrity and foster a culture of mutual respect among students and faculty members.
As the repercussions of Kohberger’s actions continue to reverberate, it serves as a stark reminder of the impact of unchecked misconduct within educational settings. Moving forward, institutions must remain vigilant in creating an environment where all members feel safe, respected, and able to voice their concerns without fear of retribution. By learning from past incidents and implementing robust policies, universities can strive to prevent similar incidents and uphold a culture of inclusivity and professionalism.
