Influencer Pilot Stranded in Antarctica as Case Suspended

An influencer, Ethan Guo, set out on a solo flight around the world aiming to raise $1 million for cancer research found himself in an unexpected predicament. The 19-year-old pilot was detained in Antarctica after being accused of landing on Chilean territory without permission. Guo’s journey, which commenced in 2024, was aimed at becoming the first person in history to fly solo to all seven continents in a small aircraft. His ultimate goal was to raise funds for cancer research, a cause close to his heart.
On June 28, Guo was arrested and charged with landing in Antarctica without the necessary permissions and providing false flight information. However, the influencer took steps to rectify the situation by agreeing to donate $30,000 to a children’s cancer foundation and stay away from Chilean territory for three years. Despite reports suggesting that he was permitted to leave the region, Guo revealed that he remains stranded in Antarctica. He made these revelations in a statement obtained by PEOPLE on August 14.
Expressing his frustrations about the situation, Guo maintained his innocence throughout the ordeal and expressed gratitude that his exoneration had been acknowledged. He highlighted that the process had been prolonged and could have been resolved quicker had all evidence been considered from the start. Furthermore, he asserted his desire to continue his mission of raising funds for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and appealed for approval for his departure flight.
Concerns were raised about Guo’s wellbeing during his detention on the icy continent. The influencer mentioned that he felt like a “prisoner” and had reportedly lost weight, underlining his desperation to leave the region. Despite being cleared of charges and deemed not guilty, the Chilean authorities allegedly prevented Guo from flying his plane off the base, further prolonging his confinement on the island.
Guo’s lawyer revealed that the Chilean government’s stance was preventing his client from leaving Antarctica. The influencer rebutted claims made by authorities that cited various reasons for his inability to depart, including adverse weather conditions, aircraft condition, fuel availability, and doubts about his flying skills. Guo refuted these reasons, asserting that he had adhered to all regulations and possessed the necessary expertise to operate his aircraft.
The ordeal has taken a toll on Guo’s health, with reports indicating a significant weight loss and a diagnosis of pericarditis, inflammation of the heart’s outer membrane. Despite the challenges he faced, Guo remains determined to resume his journey and continue his efforts in the fight against cancer. His representatives at Croft & Johnson LLP expressed concern over his declining health and the restrictions imposed by the Chilean government, emphasising the need for a resolution to enable Guo to continue his mission.
