A Breeze Airways flight traveling from Virginia to Los Angeles was unexpectedly diverted to Grand Junction, Colorado, this week due to an incident involving an “unruly passenger.” The passenger, later identified as 46-year-old David Leroy Carter Jr from Los Angeles, was allegedly intoxicated and began yelling racist slurs at airline staff while waving a skateboard onboard the flight. The disruptive behaviour prompted airline staff to restrain him twice, though he managed to break free each time. Fortunately, no physical injuries were reported during the incident.

The unfolding events, which occurred on Wednesday, Aug. 13, led to the intervention of the Grand Junction Police Department, who responded to the situation at the city’s airport. The Breeze Airways Flight MX704 had departed from Norfolk International Airport in Virginia and was en route to Los Angeles International Airport before being redirected to Grand Junction, Colorado, according to information from the police Facebook post. Despite the disruption, the suspect did not physically assault anyone, and authorities were able to take him into custody upon landing.
Following the incident, the FBI’s Denver Field Office confirmed the identity of the suspect, David Leroy Carter Jr, in a statement obtained by PEOPLE. Breeze Airways released a statement mentioning that local law enforcement officers promptly met the plane upon landing, restrained and removed the unruly passenger from the aircraft. The airline also noted that minor injuries were reported by one flight attendant and one guest, who were subsequently evaluated. Their priority remains ensuring the safety and comfort of all passengers and crew members affected by the situation.

The incident serves as a reminder of the challenges airlines continue to face with unruly passengers. In 2025, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) received 1,007 reports of such behaviour in the US alone, signalling a decrease compared to the staggering 5,973 reports filed in 2021. This significant drop reflects the ongoing efforts to enhance safety and security measures within the aviation industry. Both Breeze Airways and the Grand Junction Police Department, along with the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Colorado, did not provide further details when approached for additional information on the incident.
As airlines strive to uphold safety standards amidst challenging circumstances, incidents like these underscore the importance of maintaining order and calmness onboard flights. The swift response of authorities and airline staff in handling disruptive situations remains crucial in ensuring the well-being of all individuals onboard. Moving forward, continued vigilance and cooperation among passengers, crew members, and law enforcement will be essential in preserving a secure and harmonious travel experience for all air travellers.
The incident involving an unruly passenger on the Breeze Airways flight serves as a cautionary tale highlighting the importance of adhering to regulations and treating fellow passengers and airline staff with respect during air travel. Let us all be reminded of the significance of cooperation and mutual respect to ensure safe and pleasant journeys for everyone on board aircraft.
