Former Police Chief’s K-9 Kills His 3-Year-Old Daughter in Tragic Incident

The young victim was the daughter of Burlington Police Chief Nathan Hill, who had been housing the German Shepherd at his residence in Kit Carson after the K-9 program in another county was terminated.
The tragic incident unfolded on Monday, Aug. 11, when deputies from the Kit Carson County Sheriff’s Office responded to a distressing 911 call reporting a child being attacked by a dog in Kit Carson. Upon arrival, Sheriff Travis Belden and Deputy Darrin Newberry discovered the 3-year-old girl unresponsive and her mother in the rear of the house. The attacking German Shepherd had already been contained in a kennel by that time.
Emergency Medical Services rushed the child to a nearby hospital, where she was, unfortunately, pronounced dead. Following the attack, the dog was taken to the Burlington Dog Pound and subsequently euthanized. The Kit Carson Sheriff’s Office revealed that the dog had previously served as a narcotics detection dog with the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office. However, the dog had been retired from service when the Cheyenne County Sheriff’s Office ended its K-9 program.
