Music legend Daryl Hall has officially dismissed his legal claims against his long-time musical partner, John Oates. The duo, known for hits such as “You Make My Dreams” and “Maneater,” were at odds over Oates allegedly selling his share of a joint business venture to a third party.

The dispute dates back to November 2023 when Hall was granted a restraining order against Oates, who was accused of planning to sell his share of the business to Primary Wave Music. Hall argued that this sale would breach a confidential agreement between them and cause irreparable harm to their partnership.
According to court documents reviewed by PEOPLE, Hall voluntarily dropped his claims without prejudice in Chancery Court for Davidson County, Tenn., on August 12. The specific details of the dispute were sealed, but it was related to the interpretation of their agreement’s terms.
Despite their legal disagreements, both Hall, 78, and Oates, 77, have a long history of collaboration in the music industry. Their partnership dates back over 50 years, during which they released multiple albums and received five Grammy nominations.
In a statement to PEOPLE in May 2024, Oates acknowledged that while their working relationship on the music front was smooth, there were challenges on the business side. He mentioned that their partnership agreement, established decades ago, had become outdated and no longer suited their current circumstances.
Hall had previously expressed doubts about the possibility of a reunion with Oates, citing past disappointments and betrayals. He also claimed that he was the primary songwriter for the duo, contributing to about 90% of their songs.
Despite their legal and business disagreements, Hall & Oates remain iconic figures in the music industry. Their music continues to resonate with fans worldwide, and their legacy as one of the most successful duos in music history remains intact.
As the music world awaits further developments from these two musical legends, it is clear that their impact on the industry will endure, regardless of any legal disputes that may arise.
