In a shocking incident at a recent New York Liberty game, a man is being sought by the police for throwing a sex toy, which hit a 12-year-old girl. The incident took place on August 5th at the Barclays Center, where the Liberty were playing. The New York Police Department (NYPD) Crime Stoppers released information stating that the man is wanted for assault after throwing an object that struck the young girl on her right leg.

The object in question was identified as a sex toy according to reports from ABC 7 NY and footage obtained post the incident. The NYPD Crime Stoppers shared security footage of the unidentified man walking through the arena. Descriptions mentioned that he was wearing black shorts, black sneakers, a black t-shirt with a Beavis and Butt-Head graphic, a red baseball cap, and tattoos on both arms.
The bright green sex toy, thrown by the man, hit the young girl before landing a few rows behind a basketball hoop in the stands. The girl reported leg pain upon being struck by the object but did not require hospitalization. This alarming incident occurred during the New York Liberty’s game against the Dallas Wings, the reigning 2024 WNBA Championship winners, amidst a series of similar incidents that have been plaguing WNBA games lately.
Several incidents involving the throwing of green sex toys have occurred at WNBA games across the country since July 29th. Members of a group associated with a cryptocurrency meme coin have claimed responsibility for these disturbing acts. In another instance on the same day, an 18-year-old named Kaden Lopez was apprehended at a Phoenix Mercury and Connecticut Suns game after throwing a sex toy towards the court.
The WNBA coaches have condemned these acts, labelling them as dangerous and demeaning towards women. Despite claims from the group responsible that they did not intend to harm anyone and were merely seeking attention for their project, the actions have been widely criticised. Cheryl Reeve, the head coach of the Minnesota Lynx, voiced out against the sexualization of women through such acts, emphasising the need for accountability for those responsible.
As these incidents continue to occur, with another disruption happening during a Los Angeles Sparks game, the need to address and prevent such behaviour is becoming increasingly urgent. The safety of players and spectators must be prioritised, and steps should be taken to ensure that such disrespectful and dangerous acts are not repeated in the future.
The WNBA and authorities are actively investigating these incidents, and there is a strong call for holding those responsible accountable for their actions. Such behaviour not only poses physical risks but also perpetuates harmful stereotypes and undermines the integrity of the sport. It is crucial for swift and firm action to be taken to maintain a safe and respectful environment for all involved in WNBA games.
