In a surprising revelation, it has come to light that Queen Elizabeth had strong opinions regarding the name chosen for her granddaughter, Princess Beatrice. The Queen, known for her straightforward nature, reportedly intervened when it came to selecting a name for Princess Beatrice, causing quite a stir in the royal family.
Princess Beatrice, who recently celebrated her 37th birthday, was born to Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson on August 8, 1988, marking a significant moment for the royal family. However, it has been revealed that the original name chosen by the Duke and Duchess of York for their daughter was not approved by Queen Elizabeth.

According to reports, Prince Andrew and Sarah Ferguson initially wanted to name their baby girl Annabel, a name of Latin origin meaning “lovable.” However, Queen Elizabeth expressed her disapproval, deeming the name “too yuppie,” a term popular in the 1980s to describe young urban professionals.
As a result of the Queen’s objection, the baby remained nameless for an unusually long period of 11 days, as the family sought to find a name that would meet the Queen’s approval. Victoria was considered as a second option but was also reportedly dismissed by Queen Elizabeth.

It was during the royal family’s annual summer gathering at Balmoral Castle in Scotland that Queen Elizabeth proposed the name Beatrice for her granddaughter. Beatrice, another name of Latin origin, means “voyager (through life)” and “blessed,” reflecting the hopes and aspirations the family held for the newest royal member.
The choice of the name Beatrice came as a surprise to many, with bookies revealing that not a single bet was placed on this name at major bookmakers at the time. Beatrice also carried sentimental significance, as it was the name of a daughter of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, adding a deeper connection to the royal family’s history.
Princess Beatrice, known for her close relationship with Queen Elizabeth, was honoured to wear a significant heirloom tiara for her wedding in July 2020. The Queen Mary diamond fringe tiara, a cherished piece with historical importance, symbolised the special bond between Beatrice and her grandmother.
Following her marriage to Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, Princess Beatrice and her husband welcomed two daughters, Sienna and Athena. Both girls were given the middle name Elizabeth, further emphasising the enduring bond between Princess Beatrice and Queen Elizabeth.
The story of Princess Beatrice’s name serves as a reminder of the traditions and protocols within the royal family, where even the choice of a name is subject to the approval of the monarch. Despite the initial disagreement over the name, Princess Beatrice’s journey from a controversial naming process to becoming a beloved member of the royal family is a testament to the enduring strength of their bond.
