In a shocking development, the ex-girlfriend of the Delta Airlines pilot who was arrested in the cockpit moments after a plane landed in San Francisco is now facing charges of child sex abuse. Rustom Bhagwagar, the 34-year-old pilot, was taken into custody on July 26 as his flight touched down in San Francisco. He was charged with 24 felony counts, including engaging in sexual acts with a child aged 10 or younger, oral copulation, lewd acts, and aggravated sexual assault.
Following Bhagwagar’s arrest, a 45-year-old woman named Jennifer Powell has also been charged in relation to the case of child sexual abuse. The Contra Costa District Attorney’s Office brought charges against both individuals, alleging that they were involved in abusing a young child over a period of five years. The severity of the charges means that if convicted, both Bhagwagar and Powell could face imprisonment ranging from 15 years to life.

The case against Bhagwagar and Powell stems from an investigation that began in April, leading up to the pilot’s arrest in the cockpit in July. According to reports, Powell, who is the guardian of the alleged victim, is accused of not only being aware of the abuse but also participating in it. The abuse allegedly started when the child was just 6 years old and continued until she reached the age of 11.
District Attorney Diana Becton expressed a firm commitment to protecting children and ensuring accountability for those who harm them. She emphasised the importance of justice for victims and the need to safeguard the community from individuals who prey on children. The allegations outlined in the probable cause statement suggest a disturbing pattern of abuse that lasted for several years, highlighting the need for thorough investigation and legal action in such cases.
As the legal proceedings unfold, it remains unclear whether Bhagwagar and Powell have entered a plea or sought legal representation. The court records indicate that the reported offences took place between 2018 and 2023, indicating a prolonged period of alleged abuse. Authorities, including the Contra Costa County Sheriff’s Office and Homeland Security Investigations, have been actively involved in bringing the perpetrators to justice and ensuring the safety of the community.
The gravity of the charges and the details emerging from this case underscore the importance of vigilance in protecting vulnerable individuals, especially children, from exploitation and abuse. The collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and legal authorities reflect a commitment to upholding justice and ensuring that those responsible for such heinous acts are held accountable. The case serves as a stark reminder of the crucial role that swift and thorough action plays in safeguarding the well-being of children and preventing future instances of abuse.
In the wake of this disturbing case, it is essential for individuals who have been affected by sexual assault or abuse to seek support and assistance. Resources such as the National Sexual Assault Hotline and SAMHSA helpline offer crucial services for survivors and those in need of help. By raising awareness, promoting accountability, and providing support, society can work towards preventing and addressing cases of child sexual abuse and ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals.
