A 17-year-old teenager sustained significant thermal burns while hiking in Yellowstone National Park, as confirmed by the National Park Service (NPS). The incident occurred near Lone Star Geyser close to Old Faithful when the teen’s foot broke through a thin crust, leading to burns on his foot and ankle area. Emergency medical staff promptly responded and transported the teenager to a hospital for further treatment. This marks the first known thermal injury at Yellowstone this year, with the last similar incident reported back in September 2024.

According to the NPS, the previous incident in 2024 involved a 60-year-old woman from New Hampshire who suffered second- and third-degree burns to her lower leg after breaking through a thin crust in a thermal area while off-trail with her husband and dog. The woman was airlifted for medical treatment, while her companions remained unharmed. This recent incident has highlighted the importance of caution when exploring the thermal areas in Yellowstone National Park.

Visitors are advised by park officials to stick to designated trails and boardwalks for safety, as the thin crust around hot springs can easily break, exposing individuals to scalding water that can cause severe injuries. The NPS emphasises that the water in hot springs possesses the potential to inflict severe or even fatal burns, urging visitors to refrain from touching thermal areas or runoff and to avoid throwing objects into hot springs. Swimming or soaking in the hot springs is strictly prohibited, along with bringing pets to thermal areas.
Further details on the lone star geyser, which erupts up to 45 feet from a 12-foot cone approximately every three hours, were provided by the NPS. The Lone Star Geyser trail typically takes between two to three hours to hike, offering visitors a unique and captivating experience of geological phenomena in the park. The incident serves as a cautionary tale for individuals exploring Yellowstone’s natural wonders and the precautions necessary to ensure their safety and well-being during their visits.
Yellowstone National Park continues to be a popular destination for nature enthusiasts and travellers seeking to witness its diverse landscape and geothermal features. However, incidents like these highlight the need for vigilance and adherence to safety guidelines while exploring the park’s unique and sometimes hazardous environments. As summer approaches and more visitors flock to Yellowstone, education and awareness regarding thermal safety remain crucial to preventing accidents and injuries in this natural wonderland. Remember, always prioritize safety and respect the natural surroundings when enjoying the beauty of Yellowstone and other national parks.
