Sam Hollis, a courageous 18-year-old surfing instructor, is determined to not let a recent shark attack dampen his spirits or his love for the ocean. Dubbed as the “Shark Bite Capital of the World,” New Smyrna Beach witnessed Hollis’ brave encounter with a shark while he was out giving a lesson on surfing.
Recalling the terrifying moment, Hollis shared from his hospital bed how the shark suddenly grabbed his foot, pulling him off his board with a predatory intention. Displaying remarkable presence of mind, Hollis managed to kick the shark, prompting it to retreat, but not before sinking its teeth into his foot. Despite the shocking ordeal, Hollis remained resolute, stating that he intends to return to surfing as soon as he can.

The resilient teenager’s determination to not let fear overshadow his passion for surfing serves as an inspiration to many. In an interview with a local NBC affiliate, Hollis emphasised, “There’s no reason to stop doing something you love just ’cause something bad happened to you.” His positive outlook and unwavering spirit reflect a commendable attitude towards adversity.
While Hollis acknowledges that he may require mobility support like crutches initially post his recovery, his eagerness to get back on his surfboard remains undiminished. He firmly believes in not allowing a singular unfortunate incident to dictate his future actions or define his relationship with the water.
New Smyrna Beach, plagued by its reputation as the “Shark Bite Capital of the World,” has witnessed a number of shark attacks over the years, with Hollis becoming a recent statistic in the list of such unfortunate incidents. Despite the risks associated with ocean activities in the area, Hollis’ bravery and determination highlight the undying spirit of surfers and water enthusiasts.
According to records maintained by the International Shark Attack File at the Florida Museum of Natural History, Hollis’ encounter marked the fourth shark attack in Volusia County this year. The county has seen a staggering 359 “unprovoked” shark attacks since 1882, earning it notoriety as a hot spot for such incidents in Florida.
The story of Sam Hollis, the young surfer undeterred by a shark attack, serves as a testament to the human spirit’s resilience and unwavering passion. His courage and optimism in the face of adversity stand as a beacon of hope and inspiration, reminding everyone to pursue their passions with unwavering determination, regardless of the challenges that may come their way.
As Hollis continues his recovery journey with a positive mindset and a heart set on returning to the waves, his story echoes a powerful message of courage, determination, and the unyielding spirit that propels individuals to overcome obstacles and pursue their dreams, no matter the odds.
