An innocent summer day of working at his brother’s fence-building company turned into a nightmare for 16-year-old Noah Johnson from Slater, Iowa. A seemingly harmless bug bite led to a series of events that left the young teen fighting for his life, grappling with failing kidneys and speech loss as a result of complications from the spider bite.

Noah, a rising high school junior, initially brushed off the spider bite he received on his lower left buttock on June 18, attributing it to a minor discomfort. However, as days passed, the bite grew in both size and severity, causing excruciating pain and distress. By June 23, Noah’s bite had significantly expanded, with visible black puncture marks, resembling a pig’s snout. Concerned, his mother, Brandy Johnson, took him to urgent care, where doctors suspected an infected spider bite and initiated antibiotic treatment.
Despite medical intervention, Noah’s condition deteriorated rapidly, leading to multiple infections and a soaring fever. It became evident that urgent care was not sufficient, and Noah was rushed to Mary Greeley Medical Center, where emergency surgery was performed to address the spreading infections. Subsequently, Noah’s health took a critical turn as he entered kidney failure, necessitating his transfer to Blank Children’s Hospital in Des Moines for specialized care.
The harrowing ordeal continued for Noah and his family as he battled through kidney complications and other health setbacks in the Pediatric ICU. Facing a severe allergic reaction to pain medication and additional infections in his intestines, Noah’s physical strength waned significantly, leaving him bedridden and unable to communicate effectively. However, amidst the darkness, a ray of hope emerged when Noah’s vital signs began to show signs of improvement after a simple act of stepping outside to bask in the sunshine.
Noah’s journey to recovery was fraught with challenges; however, his resilience and unwavering spirit, coupled with the unwavering support of his family, friends, and community, propelled him towards a brighter horizon. As Noah transitions to post-hospital care, including physical therapy and continued medical follow-ups, his family remains grateful for each small victory and moment of progress in his recovery.
Noah’s near-fatal encounter with a spider bite serves as a stark reminder of the unpredictable and fragile nature of life. Brandy Johnson, reflecting on the traumatic experience, emphasised the profound shift in perspective that such crises induce, highlighting the insignificance of trivial concerns when faced with a loved one’s life-threatening ordeal. The Johnson family’s unwavering faith, community support, and Noah’s resilient spirit stand as a testament to the power of hope and unity in overcoming adversity.
As Noah embarks on the road to recovery, his community rallies behind him, offering financial support and prayers through initiatives like a GoFundMe campaign. The outpouring of support serves as a beacon of strength for Noah and his family as they navigate the challenges of post-hospital care and rebuilding Noah’s strength and wellbeing. Amidst the uncertainties of Noah’s health journey, one thing remains certain – the enduring power of faith, love, and resilience in the face of adversity.
