Heidi Matherne, a Louisiana-based artist, stumbled upon a heartwarming idea while creating a collage featuring her grandson: incorporating his actual artwork into the piece. This simple yet profound inspiration sparked a new mission for Heidi, leading her to offer personalised collages using children’s art to others. Thus, her Kiddeaux Collages series was born, aiming to help families beautifully preserve their kids’ creativity in one-of-a-kind custom collages.

Heidi Matherne, aged 53, was working on abstract collage pieces when she decided to include a line drawing of her grandson, who had just started pre-K and was fond of bringing home colourful, crayon-filled creations. The idea of incorporating his artwork into the collage struck her, making the piece more meaningful and sentimental. Encouraged by this realisation, Matherne extended the same meaningful concept to others through her Kiddeaux Collages series.
Amidst her 10-year journey with collage art, Matherne started offering Kiddeaux Collages about a year ago. Initially, she shared her work with friends and family but later decided to showcase it on TikTok, which significantly boosted her visibility. Her first Kiddeaux Collage reveal on TikTok went viral, garnering 300,000 views in just a day, surpassing her expectations and catapulting her into the spotlight.
Matherne emphasises the emotional connection to art, especially when it comes to children’s creativity, stating that their art captures a fleeting moment in time that parents long to preserve. The Kiddeaux Collages serve as a poignant reminder of a child’s growth and development, encapsulated in a unique piece of art that holds sentimental value for the entire family.
When initiating a collage project, Matherne invests time in understanding the client’s preferences regarding canvas size and colour palette. Employing birch wood panels as the base, she meticulously selects pieces of a child’s artwork that best represent their personality and creative journey. With extensive thought and care, Matherne arranges the artwork to create aesthetically pleasing collages that capture the essence of childhood.
One of the delights of Matherne’s process is witnessing children’s reactions to the finished collages. As they recognise their own artwork within the piece, their faces light up, sparking storytelling and shared memories with loved ones. This intergenerational connection and shared appreciation for creativity are at the core of Matherne’s Kiddeaux Collages, making each piece a cherished family heirloom.
Looking ahead, Matherne plans to launch an online course to guide others in creating their own Kiddeaux Collages. She aims to share her techniques and expertise with aspiring artists, ensuring the preservation of children’s unique artwork in a meaningful and sustainable way. Alongside commissions, she is also working on a new series of artwork scheduled for release in the upcoming fall, further expanding her creative horizons.
Heidi Matherne’s story serves as an inspiring testament to the power of art in connecting generations and preserving cherished memories. Through her Kiddeaux Collages, she has provided families with a tangible way to immortalise their children’s creativity, fostering a sense of togetherness and appreciation for the beauty found in the simple yet profound expressions of childhood.
