A California woman miraculously survived a harrowing ordeal after being struck by a train, resulting in the complete severance of her arm. Elieah Boyd, a 24-year-old surf instructor, was attempting to cross the train tracks in Ventura, California, with her 80-pound electric bike on July 7 when tragedy struck. Recalling the horrifying moment, Boyd shared, “I just remembered grabbing my arm and looking down and it not being there, and just telling myself, ‘There’s no way this just happened.’”

The incident occurred east of Seaward Ave in Ventura when an oncoming train collided with Boyd as she was traversing the tracks. Despite the severity of the situation, Boyd displayed incredible resilience and presence of mind. She vividly described the moment, stating, “There was no train horn that I heard, and it was just there. It was like three seconds from when I saw the train to when it happened. I just happened to have my hand still on the bike as the train [went] by, and the train barely clipped the bike, just enough to take my arm completely off.”

Initially responding to a report of a pedestrian struck by a train, law enforcement officers arrived on the scene promptly. One witness, a retired firefighter walking alongside Boyd, raised the alarm about her missing limb, ensuring that it was located and identified. Despite the severity of the accident, Boyd was found to be in stable condition shortly after the incident.

Subsequently, Boyd was airlifted to UC Irvine Medical Center, where she underwent a 10-hour limb reattachment surgery, followed by three additional surgeries to aid in the restoration of feeling in her arm. Her determination and positivity shone through as she shared her perspective on the challenging journey of recovery, stating, “Even though this is going to be a hard process and it is a hard process, I’ve been just trying to stay positive through it all.”
Currently, a GoFundMe campaign has been set up to assist Boyd with covering the extensive medical expenses incurred during her treatment. The outpouring of support has been significant, with donations approaching the $50,000 mark of the $65,000 target. As Boyd continues her recovery at the hospital, her unwavering spirit remains unbroken, fuelled by her passion for surfing. Expressing her eagerness to return to the ocean, she highlighted, “As soon as I can touch the water, I would love to be on a surfboard. [I would give] just anything to be in the water. That’s my saving grace.”
Boyd’s story serves as a powerful testament to the strength of the human spirit in the face of adversity. Her resilience and determination to overcome this life-altering experience are truly inspiring. As she looks forward to the prospect of resuming her beloved surfing activities, her story resonates as a beacon of hope and courage for many facing their own challenges.
