An astrologer in New York has been apprehended for grand larceny after supposedly deceiving an elderly lady of thousands of dollars for fortune-telling services. The Nassau County Police Department (NCPD) reported that 33-year-old Hemanth Kumar Muneppa was taken into custody on July 17, following allegations that he coerced a 68-year-old woman to withdraw $42,000 from her bank account. The woman visited a business named Anjana Ji in Hicksville, N.Y., on July 3, which provides astrology services like psychic readings. The business’s website mentioned that Muneppa claimed to possess the “power to fight evil spirits.”

The unidentified woman initially paid Muneppa $20,000 for fortune-telling services. However, during a subsequent session on July 17 at Anjana Ji, she was allegedly asked to hand over an additional $42,000. Concerned bank employees intervened when the woman was escorted to withdraw money and alerted the authorities about a possible scam. Muneppa was arrested in the bank’s parking area without resistance.

He now faces charges of grand larceny in the third degree, attempted grand larceny in the third degree, and two counts of fortune telling. In New York, charging for fortune-telling services is considered a class B misdemeanor, unless conducted purely for entertainment. The law specifies that claiming to have occult powers to influence spirits or curses for compensation is prohibited, unless performed for entertainment.
Mehwish Saeed, the proprietor of a nearby clothing store, expressed her belief that the Astrology Shop’s staff were manipulating people. She condemned playing with emotions and offering false hope as reprehensible. The NCPD Second Squad is urging other potential victims to come forward. Muneppa is scheduled to appear in court on August 14 for further proceedings.
The incident involving the fortuneteller and the elderly woman highlights the vulnerable position some individuals may find themselves in when seeking spiritual guidance or solace. It serves as a cautionary tale about the importance of verifying the credentials and intentions of those offering such services. The case also sheds light on the legal boundaries surrounding fortune-telling practices and the consequences of exploiting vulnerable individuals for financial gain.
Ultimately, the community’s vigilance and swift action by law enforcement in response to suspicious activities are crucial in preventing further exploitation and holding perpetrators of such deceitful schemes accountable. This incident underscores the significance of maintaining transparency and ethical standards within the spiritual and mystical service industry to safeguard individuals seeking guidance and comfort.
The aftermath of this case may prompt regulatory bodies and authorities to review existing laws and enforcement mechanisms related to fortune-telling and psychic services to enhance consumer protection and deter fraudulent practices. As the legal proceedings unfold, it is essential to recognise the impact of such incidents on victims and the wider community, emphasising the need for awareness and vigilance when engaging with spiritual practitioners.
