A popular YouTuber couple has shared their harrowing experience of welcoming their second child, only for the mother to end up in a medical coma due to an undetected birth complication. Kate Albrecht and Joey Zehr, known for their YouTube channel Mr. Kate, detailed the rollercoaster journey of joy and fear they faced after the birth of their daughter, Mars.

The couple’s story began with Kate’s long-held dream of experiencing a natural home birth, after delivering their first child via C-section. The birth of their daughter, Mars, on May 22, seemed like a dream come true until Kate developed a rare medical complication that led to a coma. Joey and Kate had meticulously planned for dual-care during Kate’s pregnancy, seeking the support of both an OB-GYN and a midwife to ensure flexibility in their birthing plan.

Kate’s labour culminated in the magical birth of Mars en caul, a rare occurrence symbolising a deep connection in many cultures. However, their joy was short-lived as Kate began experiencing severe headaches and fatigue postpartum. Despite seeking medical attention, her condition worsened, leading to a sudden collapse at home that left her unconscious and in need of urgent medical care.

Joey’s quick thinking and the assistance of a film crew medic helped get Kate the immediate attention she required. Diagnosed with eclampsia, a serious complication related to high blood pressure during pregnancy, Kate was placed in a medical coma for her own safety. The following days were filled with uncertainty and fear for Joey, as he navigated caring for their two young children and advocating for Kate’s health in the hospital.

After a terrifying ordeal, Kate slowly began to recover and was eventually discharged from the hospital.
