Professional ocean diver, Kayleigh Nicole Grant, recently recounted a truly remarkable experience during a dive with a pod of orca whales. Grant described it as “some of the best 30 seconds” of her life in the ocean, as she got up close and personal with these majestic creatures. The encounter took place as the whales were hunting and had just made a kill, which Grant observed in awe as they swam near her.

In a video shared on her Instagram account, Grant narrated the moment when she came face to face with the orca whales. She mentioned how she could see that the whales were feasting on their freshly caught prey, showcasing their gratitude and pride for their hard-earned meal. Despite the proximity of the orca, Grant expressed that she was more amazed than frightened by the experience, noting that witnessing the orcas sharing their food to reinforce their bond was truly magnificent.
Grant revealed that the orca whale came so close that she could even see its teeth, but she maintained her composure, finding the encounter more impressive than terrifying. She explained in her caption the significance of orcas hunting together and sharing their food, shedding light on how these intelligent apex predators exhibit altruistic behaviour not just within their pod but also towards other species, including humans.
As an advocate for ocean conservation and exploration, Grant, also known as “mermaid.kayleigh” online, uses her platform to educate her nearly 3 million followers about marine life and behaviours. Through her company, Kaimana Ocean Safari, she offers ocean adventure tours off the coast of Hawaii, allowing guests to observe and potentially interact with various marine animals, including sea turtles, dolphins, manta rays, sharks, and whales.
Grant’s passion for the ocean and its inhabitants stems from her upbringing near Philadelphia, which eventually led her to move to Hawaii to delve deeper into marine conservation efforts. Her commitment to connecting people with the ocean and inspiring a change in daily habits reflects her dedication to protecting the natural world and fostering a deeper appreciation for marine life.
In a similar account of a breathtaking ocean encounter, professional underwater photographer, Jono Allen, recently shared his exclusive experience with a mother humpback whale. Allen described how the whale displayed maternal instincts towards him, attempting to lift him out of the water to help him breathe, mirroring the behaviour she exhibits towards her calves. Despite his overwhelming desire to embrace the whale’s gesture, Allen prioritised the safety and well-being of the animal, showing respect for the creature’s natural instincts.
Both Grant and Allen’s stories underscore the profound connections that individuals can form with marine life, highlighting the enchanting and sometimes unexpected interactions that occur in the depths of the ocean. Their experiences serve as a reminder of the beauty and wonder that exist beneath the surface, encouraging others to respect and protect the precious marine ecosystems that sustain a diverse array of species.
