An evening of entertainment turned into a scene of pandemonium for Beyoncé fans leaving her Atlanta concert, as an incident at a MARTA station escalated into chaos. On the night of July 15, concert-goers departing from the Mercedes-Benz Stadium utilized the Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority (MARTA) for their journey back home. However, what was meant to be a routine commute took a dramatic turn at the Vine City station, resulting in multiple injuries.

Stephany Fisher, the senior director of communications for MARTA, disclosed to PEOPLE that 11 individuals leaving the Beyoncé concert encountered injuries at the Vine City Station. One person sustained a broken ankle, seven individuals were taken to the hospital due to cuts and scrapes, while another person opted not to be transported. Following their arrival at their destinations, two individuals sought medical attention.

As reported by Fisher, MARTA Police officers present at the scene detailed that the chaotic situation ensued when an individual began screaming and fleeing, triggering a stampede on the escalator. The sudden surge in movement caused the escalator to accelerate briefly before coming to an abrupt halt. Fisher affirmed that the escalator has been sealed off, with both MARTA and the manufacturer, Schindler, launching investigations into the incident.
During a meeting with the MARTA board on July 17, acting CEO Rhonda Allen relayed that the commotion was initiated by a 10-year-old girl who was allegedly startled by a bug outside the station. This account was supported by witnesses and video footage circulating on TikTok, according to Fisher’s statement to PEOPLE.
Witnesses and video evidence captured the distressing scene of the escalator malfunction, resulting in concert-goers falling over one another in a panicked state. Personal accounts described the harrowing ordeal as chaotic with people tumbling amidst the commotion. The aftermath showed injured individuals being assisted by fellow attendees.
An inspection certificate displayed on the same escalator, as reported by 11Alive, indicated that its validity is expected to expire in the upcoming month. Schindler, the escalator’s manufacturer, released a statement in response to the incident, expressing condolences to the injured passengers and asserting their commitment to cooperating with authorities to determine the cause of the incident.
PEOPLE has contacted Schindler for additional comments on the matter. The aftermath of the Beyoncé concert in Atlanta serves as a stark reminder of how unexpected events can quickly escalate into situations of peril even in seemingly mundane settings. As investigations continue, concert-goers and authorities await further insights into the circumstances that led to the alarming incident.
