A heartbreaking incident has shaken a Texas family and the local youth soccer community as they mourn the loss of a 6-year-old boy, Raul Chavez, who tragically lost his life in a UTV rollover accident. Raul, whose aspiration was to become a soccer goalkeeper, was described as a bright light, joyful, kind, and full of curiosity and love.

The devastating accident took place on July 13, leading to the untimely passing of Raul Chavez and leaving three other children injured, including his 9-year-old and 13-year-old brothers. The Gainesville Police Department responded to a report of a major accident involving a 4×4 rollover on the 3100 block of U.S. Highway 82. The police revealed that the children, aged between 6 and 13, were riding on a Polaris side-by-side vehicle in a parking lot when the driver lost control, causing the vehicle to roll over and eject its occupants.
Despite swift medical attention and transportation to the hospital, the young soccer enthusiast succumbed to his injuries. Raul was pinned underneath the UTV during the rollover, along with his brothers who also sustained injuries. Raul’s 9-year-old brother suffered pelvic fractures and lung and liver bruises but was discharged from the hospital days later.
The Ennis Soccer Association, where Raul was an active member, paid tribute to him on Facebook, highlighting his significant presence both on and off the field. The association described Raul as not just a player but a part of their family, a teammate, a brother, and a friend whose spirit, kindness, and smile touched everyone who knew him.
Raul’s family had recently bought new gear for him, including goalie gloves, as he eagerly awaited the upcoming soccer season. A GoFundMe campaign has been initiated to support Raul’s family with funeral expenses and medical bills. The fundraiser emphasised Raul’s positive attributes, portraying him as a beacon of joy, kindness, and love with dreams of excelling as a soccer goalkeeper.
In honour of Raul’s memory, a candlelight vigil is scheduled to take place at Veterans Park on July 21, organised by the Ennis Soccer Association. Coach Leo Olmos expressed deep emotions ahead of the vigil, stating, “It’s going to be very, very emotional. I truly am going to miss him.”
Investigations into the accident are ongoing, according to the Gainesville Police Department. The community continues to offer support and solidarity to the Chavez family during this unimaginably difficult time. The tragic loss of young Raul Chavez serves as a poignant reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with our loved ones.
