Oscar-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o recently shared her personal battle with fibroids, shedding light on the painful and often dismissed condition. In a heartfelt Instagram post on July 15, Nyong’o revealed that she underwent surgery in 2014 to remove 30 fibroids, coinciding with her Best Supporting Actress win for “12 Years a Slave.”
Fibroids are non-cancerous growths in the uterus that can cause a range of distressing symptoms, including heavy periods, pelvic pain, and bladder issues. Despite the prevalence of fibroids affecting 8 out of 10 Black women and 7 out of 10 white women, there remains a lack of open discussion about the condition.

In her post, Nyong’o highlighted the common misconception that female pain, such as period pain, is normal. She acknowledged the stigma and silence surrounding fibroids, stressing the importance of rejecting the normalization of such suffering. The actress shared her own journey of feeling dismissed, confused, and isolated in dealing with the condition.
Determined to make a difference, Nyong’o announced a partnership with the Foundation for Women’s Health to establish the FWH x Lupita Nyong’o Uterine Fibroid Research Grant. This initiative aims to fund research into innovative treatments for uterine fibroids, with a focus on improving the quality of life for the estimated 15 million Americans affected by this chronic condition.
Nyong’o’s advocacy extended beyond social media as she joined forces with lawmakers on Capitol Hill to push for increased funding for fibroid research. Current treatment options range from surgical interventions to medication, but the actress emphasised the urgent need for more effective and less invasive solutions.
By sharing her own experience and raising awareness on a public platform, Nyong’o hopes to empower other women who have felt marginalized in their struggles with fibroids. Her call to action resonates with the broader goal of encouraging open conversations, early education, and comprehensive support systems for individuals facing similar health challenges.
As Nyong’o urges for a change in how society approaches female health issues, her courage and advocacy serve as a beacon of inspiration for individuals navigating their own battles with fibroids. The actress’s unwavering commitment to amplifying voices and fostering understanding around this prevalent yet neglected condition marks a significant step towards driving tangible improvements in women’s healthcare.
In a world where women’s health concerns are often sidelined or minimised, Lupita Nyong’o’s candour and resilience stand as a powerful reminder of the importance of prioritising and destigmatising conditions like fibroids. Through her unwavering advocacy and actions, Nyong’o continues to uplift and empower individuals affected by fibroids, sparking conversations and initiatives that pave the way for a more supportive and informed future.
