An 18-year-old man from Kentucky, Andrew “Andi” Stratton, is in danger of losing his hand after a firework accident that almost caused him to lose his eyesight. The incident occurred on June 27 when a “faulty firework” exploded in his hand, resulting in the amputation of three fingers and half of his thumb. The young man, who had recently graduated from high school and works in construction, was with friends in Lawrenceburg when the accident happened.

According to a GoFundMe page set up by a loved one, the explosion caused severe superficial burns to Stratton’s hand and face, with the potential of blinding him in what was described as a “freak accident.” Emergency responders arrived promptly at the scene and rushed him to UK Healthcare for surgery. Despite the efforts of the medical team, Stratton was left with significant injuries, including pins in his left pinky and the loss of half of his thumb and three middle fingers down to the knuckle.

Aside from the physical trauma to his hand, Stratton also suffered severe burns on his face and lower stomach, as well as cornea scratches due to firework debris. He spent 12 days in the hospital, and although doctors managed to save part of his hand, there remains a risk of further amputation. The road to recovery will be long and challenging, with several more surgeries anticipated in the coming weeks and months.

Despite the painful ordeal, Stratton is already contemplating his future and how he can return to work in construction. His mother, Shawna Bowman, expressed concerns about the adequacy of his insurance coverage for a prosthetic hand, given the functional limitations he may face. The family is navigating the aftermath of the incident, including the circulation of a video capturing the harrowing moments when Stratton called for help while bystanders filmed the scene instead of assisting him.
