After more than three decades in the skies, a dedicated pilot, Brad Hachat, recently landed into retirement with an emotional tribute from his family. The 64-year-old’s aviation journey began during his college days, where exposure to a T-38 mockup sparked a deep passion for flying. Hachat enrolled in the Air Force Initial Flight Screening program in 1982, flying a T-41 at the age of 22, setting the course for his career as a pilot.

Reflecting on his experience, Hachat shared, “I always had a love for flying. My dad was a big aviation enthusiast and even built his own airplane.” Following his engineering studies and service in the Air Force, which included both active duty and Air National Guard roles, Hachat joined American Airlines in 1990, embarking on a 35-year career as a commercial airline pilot.
On his final flight from Hawaii to Arizona on July 1, 2025, Hachat was greeted at the gate by his family, adorned in Hawaiian shirts and leis, holding heartfelt signs. Despite his initial reluctance for a retirement celebration, the surprise orchestrated by his daughter Lindsay and stepmother Denise turned out to be a touching conclusion to his remarkable career.
The family’s plan to surprise Hachat at the Hawaii layover had to be adjusted due to time constraints, leading them to converge in Phoenix. Lindsay expressed, “We thought it would be super difficult to get the whole family there on relatively short notice, but everyone in the family, without hesitation, committed and said they would make it work to be present.”
With American Airlines and Denise’s assistance, the family secured special gate passes, allowing Hachat’s children, grandchildren, mother, and stepfather to fly in from different states to share in the moment. The heartfelt reunion at the gate brought tears to Hachat’s eyes, as he felt overwhelmed with gratitude for the surprise orchestrated by his loved ones.
Over the course of his career, Hachat piloted a range of aircraft, from military jets like the A-10 and F-16 to commercial planes such as the 757, 777, and Airbus 321. Despite the sacrifices in missed family occasions and the challenges of constant travel, he cherishes the diverse people he met and the breathtaking destinations he visited through his work.
As he savored the celebratory moments with his family post-retirement, Hachat shared his mix of emotions, feeling relieved from the weight of responsibility while also grappling with the realization that he would no longer experience the thrill of flying. The family gathering, marked by drinks, food, and shared laughter, provided a fitting conclusion to a career filled with adventures in the sky.
Hachat’s story serves as a testament to the dedication and passion of individuals in the aviation industry, showcasing the moments of joy and bittersweet farewells that come with a lifelong commitment to flying. As he begins this new chapter in retirement, Hachat’s legacy as a seasoned pilot will live on through the memories shared with his beloved family and the countless passengers he safely transported across the skies.
