New details have surfaced in the case of Angelina Resendiz, a 21-year-old Navy sailor who tragically lost her life. Resendiz disappeared from her Navy base in Virginia in May and was later discovered deceased on June 9. Initially, reports indicated that Resendiz was last seen at her barracks in Miller Hall at Naval Station Norfolk on May 29. However, a recent Department of the Navy memo, received by Texas Rep. Henry Cuellar, disclosed that Resendiz was last seen with another unidentified sailor on that same day.
Angelina Resendiz was described by her mother as a kind and compassionate young woman who radiated positivity in their lives. The Navy memo shed light on the sequence of events leading up to Resendiz’s heartbreaking passing. Assigned to the USS James E. Williams before her death, Resendiz was last observed at the barracks of a fellow sailor around 10 a.m. local time during a wellness check on another individual.

The Naval Station Norfolk Base Police commenced a welfare check at 5:45 a.m. on the day of Resendiz’s disappearance after she requested to be picked up at the barracks but could not be located. Subsequently, she was found in another sailor’s room later that day. The surveillance timeline revealed that Resendiz failed to report for duty at 7:30 a.m. the following day and was nowhere to be found during a subsequent wellness check alongside the sailor she was last seen with.
Regarding the investigation, details emerged weeks after attorney Marshall Griffin confirmed that a man named Jermiah Copeland had been detained in connection with the case. The Navy had suspicions surrounding Copeland’s involvement, leading to his confinement pending further investigation. The Naval Criminal Investigative Service (NCIS) also confirmed that a Navy sailor had been placed in pretrial confinement related to Resendiz’s case.
Resendiz’s body was discovered by the NCIS on June 9 in a wooded area off-base in Norfolk. The Norfolk Medical Examiner’s Office officially identified her remains on June 10. Following the identification, Resendiz’s body was repatriated to the Valley International Airport in Harlingen, Texas, and returned home with military honours. Esmeralda Castle, Resendiz’s mother, expressed deep sorrow over the loss of her daughter, emphasising that the individual accountable for the tragedy had made deliberate choices resulting in Angie’s untimely death.
Castle described Angelina as a beacon of kindness and compassion, highlighting the immeasurable void left in their hearts by her absence. The family mourns the loss of a beloved daughter and calls for justice to be served in this devastating ordeal. As the investigation unfolds, more answers may surface, shedding light on the circumstances surrounding Resendiz’s tragic passing.
The case of Angelina Resendiz serves as a poignant reminder of the importance of seeking justice and closure for those who are grievously affected by such heartbreaking losses. The community remains vigilant in demanding accountability and resolution in the wake of this profound tragedy.
