Ntare Guma Mbaho Mwine recently shared insights into the rigorous physical transformation he underwent for his compelling character in the Apple TV+ series “Smoke.” Speaking exclusively to PEOPLE at the show’s premiere during the Tribeca Festival, the actor delved into his approach to portraying the troubled fry cook, Freddy Fasano. The series, created by Dennis Lehane, follows officials portrayed by Taron Egerton and Jurnee Smollett as they pursue two serial arsonists, with Mwine tackling the role of one of the firestarters, Freddy Fasano, a reserved worker whose quest for a job promotion leads to a rapid unraveling.

In his candid discussion, Mwine described his character as “the loneliest man on the planet,” emphasizing the emotional depth he found while inhabiting the role. Following the filming, he swiftly regained 15 pounds in just a week to restore his health.
