Kelsey Smith, a Navy officer and dentist, shares her unique experience living and working aboard the USS Carl Vinson in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE. Smith’s journey to the high seas began with a childhood dream of becoming a dentist. Growing up in Washington, she nurtured a passion for science and helping others, which led her to join a U.S. Navy scholarship program that covered her dental school tuition and provided a living stipend.

After being accepted into the program, Smith served as a Navy dentist aboard the USS Carl Vinson for two years. Living on an aircraft carrier presented a new set of challenges for Smith, who described it as a never-ending sleepover with her best friends, albeit a little noisier. She reminisces about sharing a bathroom with other women and bunk beds with her best friend, likening the experience to college life with the constant hum of jet engines overhead.
Following her acceptance into the Navy scholarship program, Smith attended the University of Washington’s dental school in Seattle after finishing her undergraduate studies at Gonzaga University. She then underwent training at Officer Development School and a one-year residency in general dentistry in San Diego before being assigned to the USS Carl Vinson, a massive aircraft carrier with about 5,000 crew members when fully operational.
Reflecting on her first experiences on the USS Carl Vinson, Smith recalls feeling overwhelmed by the metal surroundings and maze-like hallways of the ship. Despite the initial disorientation, Smith found solace in the daily routine of treating patients and assisting in dental procedures, including night clinics to cater to the ship’s 24/7 operational schedule. The job demanded flexibility and adaptability, especially when dealing with unpredictable supply logistics that often led to shortages of essential dental supplies.
Although life at sea meant extended periods away from family and limited exposure to natural sunlight, Smith found joy in memorable experiences such as port calls to various countries and participating in unique shipboard traditions. From running her first 5K race on the ship to crossing the equator ceremony on Christmas Day, Smith embraced the challenges and adventures that came with serving as a Navy dentist.
After completing her two-year deployment on the USS Carl Vinson, Smith was stationed in Naples, Italy, where she will continue her service as a Navy dentist for the next three years. During her time in Italy, Smith has shared her experiences online through viral videos, aiming to shed light on Navy dental careers and the scholarship program. She hopes to inspire others and provide valuable information about a lesser-known career path within the military.
Looking ahead, Smith remains open to the possibilities that lie beyond her current commitment to the Navy. Whether she continues her career in uniform or transitions to a new chapter in dentistry, Smith’s resilience and determination to overcome challenges shine through in her unwavering dedication to serving her country and community.
As Smith continues to share her Navy career journey with the world, her story serves as a testament to the courage and perseverance of those who navigate life at sea aboard massive aircraft carriers like the USS Carl Vinson.
