A 26-year-old German backpacker, Carolina Wilga, has gone missing in the Australian Outback after abandoning her van, according to authorities. Wilga, who has been backpacking around Australia for the past two years, was last seen on Sunday, June 29. Western Australia Police Acting Inspector Jessica Securo expressed concerns about the challenging terrain, stating, “The terrain—it’s outback country and there’s large rocky outcrops, so although there’s a number of tracks, you can see how it would be easy to become lost or disoriented.”

The Western Australia Police Force revealed that Wilga’s abandoned Mitsubishi Delica was found broken down in the Karroun Hill area in the north-east Wheatbelt region of Western Australia. Despite intense search efforts, Wilga remains missing, prompting authorities to deploy additional resources to locate her. Inspector Securo indicated that it is probable Wilga became lost and walked away from her vehicle amidst the challenging outback landscape. The dense and rocky terrain coupled with the remote location of the abandoned van has added complexity to the search operation.

Wilga’s family last heard from her on June 18, exacerbating concerns about her disappearance. Authorities disclosed that Wilga was last seen visiting a store in Beacon, around 200 miles east of Perth, on June 29. Subsequently, her deserted van was discovered about 62 miles north of this location. Police are investigating the possibility that Wilga’s vehicle got stuck and are examining its condition to determine its viability for the area. While no signs of foul play have been detected at this time, the investigation continues to uncover vital clues.
Efforts to track Wilga have been challenging as her phone is switched off, hindering communication attempts. Investigators are urging anyone with information or drone footage captured in the Beacon or surrounding areas between June 29 and July 4 to come forward. Wilga’s description, including her German origin, slim build, long wavy brown hair, brown eyes, and distinctive tattoos, has been widely shared in the search for her. The community is rallying together to support the search and provide any assistance possible.
As the search intensifies, the police are meticulously scouring through Wilga’s vehicle to glean insights into her whereabouts. Concerns about her well-being are mounting with each passing day, underscoring the urgency of the search operation. Inspector Securo emphasised the importance of analysing the vehicle’s contents to guide search efforts effectively. The search and rescue mission in the rugged outback terrain remains a top priority for authorities as they endeavour to ensure Wilga’s safe return.
In times of crisis like this, the collective efforts of law enforcement, local communities, and concerned individuals play a vital role in aiding search and rescue operations. The mysterious circumstances surrounding Carolina Wilga’s disappearance have stirred emotions and underlined the need for swift and decisive action. As the search for the missing backpacker continues, hopes are pinned on a positive resolution and her safe return.
