A tragic airplane crash off the coast of San Diego resulted in the loss of six lives, including the pilot and his pregnant wife. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) recently released a preliminary report shedding light on the events leading up to the fatal incident on June 8.

The crash claimed the lives of pilot Landon Baldwin, his wife Torrie Baldwin, and passengers Jeremy Bingham, along with his adult sons Ayden, Bailey, and Gavin Bingham. The group had flown from Phoenix to San Diego the day before the crash and was returning to Phoenix when the tragedy occurred.

According to the NTSB report, after taking off in San Diego, the pilot was instructed by air traffic control to make a left turn. Subsequently, the aircraft climbed to approximately 2,000 feet before abruptly descending to an altitude of just 200 feet. Controllers then issued a low altitude alert, urging the pilot to climb to 4,000 feet.
During communication with air traffic control, the pilot revealed that he was “struggling” to maintain control of the aircraft and climb. Despite being asked if he could see the nearest airport, which was only a mile away, Landon expressed difficulty and proceeded to make erratic maneuvers before issuing mayday calls.
The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported that the plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean near San Diego around 12:30 p.m. local time under unknown circumstances. A police helicopter located an oil slick approximately two miles offshore shortly after the crash.
The NTSB report highlighted that the pilot, a close friend of the Cessna’s regular pilot, had expressed some nervousness about flying in the busy southern California airspace before the trip. However, his proficiency during their review of the departure procedure was noted prior to the crash.
Landon and Torrie, both in their 20s, were already parents to two children and were expecting their third. Relatives and friends remembered the couple as proud and devoted parents who centred their lives around their growing family. A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to support the Bingham family, who were also passengers on the fatal flight.
The devastating loss of lives in the tragic plane crash has left the community and loved ones in shock. The details of the NTSB’s preliminary report offer insight into the moments leading up to the crash, highlighting the challenges the pilot faced before the aircraft went down.
As investigations continue to determine the cause of the crash, the memories of those lost in this heartbreaking incident will endure through the support and love of their families and friends. The impact of this tragedy serves as a reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of cherishing every moment with our loved ones.
