Former UFC champion Randy Couture was recently involved in a single-vehicle accident at a race track in Missouri, leading to his hospitalization, according to various sources.

Couture, a well-known figure in the MMA world, sustained first and second-degree burns alongside other injuries during the incident. He was subsequently airlifted to a specialised burn centre in Kansas City after the crash occurred while he was practising for his upcoming debut in the National Hot Rod Association racing series, as first reported by TMZ.

The 62-year-old athlete’s crash took place at the Flying H Drag Strip within the I-70 Motorsports Park in Odessa, Missouri, as specified by the Kansas City Star. Sources close to Couture have conveyed to ESPN that there is cautious optimism regarding his recovery. A spokesperson informed MMA Junkie, as cited by USA Today, that they anticipate Couture to make a full recovery.
Despite the severity of the crash, details about the root cause remain undisclosed. At present, representatives for Couture have refrained from providing additional information following requests from PEOPLE.
Couture had recently initiated the licensing process to participate in his inaugural NHRA race, based on reports from ESPN. Expressing his enthusiasm for racing, Couture acknowledged the complexities of the sport during an appearance on the Bubba The Love Sponge Show where he likened it to his experiences in martial arts.
Having retired from professional MMA competition in 2011, Couture was inducted into the UFC Hall of Fame in 2006. He is recognised as a former two-weight UFC titleholder. Over the years, Couture has diversified his interests, including a passion for racing, as evidenced by his recent pursuit of a NHRA racing venture.
Notably, this is not the first time Couture has faced a health scare. In 2020, he was involved in an ATV accident with his then-girlfriend, resulting in physical injuries that necessitated surgical intervention. Despite the setback, he made a complete recovery following the incident.
Throughout his career, Couture has captivated audiences with his skills in the octagon and continues to inspire fans with his resilient spirit in overcoming challenges both in and out of the ring.
As the MMA community and fans worldwide rally behind Couture during his recovery, his unwavering determination and indomitable will are emblematic of his enduring spirit as a fighter both inside and outside the arena.
