Two days before a devastating flood took the lives of at least 27 campers and counselors at Camp Mystic in Hunt, Texas, an inspector gave approval to the camp’s operations. The approval included a note acknowledging the presence of an emergency plan. However, the specifics of this plan have not been disclosed.

The Christian all-girls camp had a written plan to address natural disasters which was highlighted during training sessions for volunteers and camp employees. While the details of the emergency plans are currently unknown as the copies are not retained by the Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS), Lara Anton from the agency stressed that camps are responsible for formulating their own emergency protocols.
According to Anton, these plans are expected to cover a range of scenarios including disasters, serious accidents, epidemics, or fatalities such as flooding or tornadoes. The inspector’s role is to ensure that the plans are properly displayed in all buildings within the camp premises and that the staff members are familiar with the procedures outlined.
In response to the recent tragedy, questions are being raised regarding the level of preparedness for natural disasters in the Hill Country region, as the flooding of the Guadalupe River has claimed the lives of at least 119 people with 161 individuals still reported missing, including campers and a counselor from Camp Mystic.
Founded in 1926, Camp Mystic has a historical backdrop of flooding incidents. Despite experiencing floods in the past, the recent catastrophic event caught many by surprise. The aftermath of the flood has left behind a trail of poignant scenes including stuffed animals, vibrant trunks, and personal belongings of the young victims, underscoring the magnitude of the devastation caused.
The flood has claimed the lives of young children such as 8-year-old Renee Smajstrla, who was remembered fondly by her uncle as someone who cherished her moments at Camp Mystic. The loss of lives includes young campers like Lila Bonner, Eloise Peck, Sarah Marsh, Hanna and Rebecca Lawrence, as well as Janie Hunt, highlighting the diverse backgrounds of those impacted by the tragedy.
Local reports reveal how the floodwaters submerged the camp, leading to a heroic effort by camp counselors who worked tirelessly to ensure the safety of the children. The incident has triggered an outpouring of support for the victims and their families as the community comes to terms with the scale of the disaster.
As recovery efforts continue and the community mourns the devastating loss, the focus remains on evaluating and strengthening emergency preparedness measures to prevent such tragedies in the future. The need for comprehensive disaster management strategies and swift response mechanisms in camps and similar establishments has gained prominence in light of the recent events.
The resilience and compassion displayed in the face of this tragedy serve as a testament to the spirit of unity and support within the community. As the nation grapples with the aftermath of this catastrophe, efforts to remember and honour the lives lost at Camp Mystic continue, ensuring that their memory lives on in the hearts of many.
