French fencer Ysaora Thibus has been cleared of doping accusations following a decision by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. Thibus, who was determined to have tested positive for a banned substance, attributed this to kissing her boyfriend, who unknowingly ingested the substance. Thibus, a member of the French Olympic team, faced a potential four-year ban from fencing after a doping control test in January 2024 detected ostarine, a prohibited substance known to mimic the effects of testosterone and anabolic steroids.

Ostarine is a banned substance that prompts muscle growth, as per WebMD. In June 2024, the Doping Disciplinary Tribunal (DDT) ruled that Thibus showed no fault or negligence and did not impose any ineligibility period. However, the World Anti-Doping Agency contested Thibus’ explanation, claiming that her boyfriend’s ingestion of the substance without her awareness was not a viable defense. Consequently, in July 2024, the agency challenged the DDT’s decision, seeking a four-year ban for Thibus through the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS).
After a year-long process, Thibus was ultimately vindicated. On July 7, the CAS announced the dismissal of the appeal following an in-person hearing held at its headquarters in Switzerland. The CAS panel deliberated on the evidence and acknowledged that a dose of ostarine comparable to what Thibus’ partner consumed could have been transferred through kissing, thereby leading to the positive test result.
The CAS upheld the original decision that Thibus bore no fault or negligence in the matter, ruling that the presence of ostarine in her system was unintentional. Thibus’ participation in the 2024 Summer Olympics in Paris, where she finished fifth in her event, was under scrutiny due to this issue. Nonetheless, she has been cleared of all allegations, allowing her to continue her fencing career without the shadow of doping accusations.
Thibus had previously won a silver medal in the team foil event at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, showcasing her talent and commitment to the sport. Despite the challenges and uncertainties surrounding the doping allegations, Thibus has emerged victorious, with her integrity intact as she moves forward with her athletic pursuits. The support and understanding of the CAS in acknowledging the unique circumstances of her case have paved the way for a positive resolution that highlights the importance of thorough examination and consideration in such matters within the realm of professional sports.
In the competitive world of fencing, where precision, skill, and dedication are paramount, Ysaora Thibus stands as a beacon of resilience and determination. Her unwavering commitment to fair play and adherence to anti-doping regulations have been affirmed through the recent CAS ruling. As Thibus looks ahead to future competitions and endeavours, she does so with a renewed sense of vindication and an unwavering focus on achieving her athletic goals.
