Civil rights activist Charles D. Neblett, best known as a founding member of The Freedom Singers, is using his voice once again to raise awareness about prostate cancer, which disproportionately affects Black men. After being diagnosed with Stage IV metastatic prostate cancer, Neblett, at 84 years old, is spearheading a national movement for early detection, awareness, and Black men’s health.
On Father’s Day in 2024, Neblett shared his prostate cancer diagnosis with his family, including his six children. His wife, Marvinia Benton Neblett, and his sons have come together to support him in spreading his message to a wider audience. Neblett sees his illness as an opportunity to encourage others to take their health seriously, especially Black men who may avoid seeking medical help.

Neblett’s son, Khary Neblett, plays a significant role in his father’s caregiving, ensuring he has nutritious meals, accompanies him to appointments, and engages him in holistic treatments. His wife, Marvinia, manages his medications and provides unwavering support during this challenging time. The family’s collaborative effort showcases their dedication to Neblett’s health and advocacy.

Navigating the healthcare system has presented challenges for the Neblett family, especially with the financial burden of necessary medications. Despite facing obstacles such as high co-pays and insurance complexities, Marvinia remains resilient in her efforts to secure the best care for her husband. The family’s candid portrayal of their struggles sheds light on the systemic issues many families encounter in accessing healthcare.
Neblett’s other sons have joined the cause, with initiatives ranging from integrating prostate cancer awareness into school curriculums to launching grassroots movements like the #BlackProstateCheckChallenge. These efforts aim to empower Black men to prioritize their health, undergo screenings, and challenge stigmas surrounding prostate cancer in their communities. The Neblett family’s collective advocacy demonstrates the power of unity in driving social change.
The campaign spearheaded by Neblett and his family has garnered significant attention and support, reaching millions of individuals nationwide. By combining personal stories with scientific data, the campaign emphasises the importance of early detection and education in combating prostate cancer, particularly among Black men who face higher risks of the disease. The Neblett family’s initiative serves as a catalyst for dialogue, awareness, and systemic reform within healthcare.
As Neblett reflects on his journey, he acknowledges the legacy he is leaving behind—a legacy of courage, advocacy, and compassion. He views his battle with cancer as a platform for change and hopes to inspire others to take charge of their health. With the unwavering support of his family, collaborators, and advocates, Neblett continues to use his voice to uplift and empower communities affected by prostate cancer.
In conclusion, Charles D. Neblett’s transformative journey from civil rights activism to cancer advocacy exemplifies the resilience and determination of a true freedom fighter. His commitment to raising awareness about prostate cancer and promoting health equity for Black men serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for generations to come. As Neblett bravely confronts his own health challenges, he paves the way for a brighter, healthier future for all.
