Rescuers recently saved a dog named Superman from a pile of debris in Texas’ Hill Country, left behind by the devastating floods on July 4. The dog, rightfully named after the famous Man of Steel, was found alone on the wreckage following the tragic event that resulted in the loss of his owner. It was reported that Superman’s owner was among the 94 casualties linked to the flooding, triggered by months’ worth of rainfall in just a few hours in Central Texas and the Guadalupe River area.

With over 100 pets impacted by the floods in Central Texas, Austin Pets Alive! (APA!) has been actively involved in aiding these furry companions and their families. The animal welfare organisation has been working tirelessly, taking in numerous pets from Williamson County and Kerr County shelters to allow space for lost or injured animals affected by the calamity. Additionally, APA! has set up a makeshift veterinary hospital in Kerrville, Texas, to tend to the influx of pet patients and deployed rescue teams to search for animals in need near the Guadalupe River.

The rescue team that found Superman encountered a fearful and distressed dog who had been through a traumatic experience of being swept away from his home. Despite initial hesitation and fear, volunteers managed to gain Superman’s trust through patience and compassion, ultimately rescuing him from the debris safely. Superman’s surviving family members, who are grieving the loss of his owner, are currently caring for him with the help of an APA! temporary foster.

As the community grapples with the aftermath of the floods, APA! shared Superman’s poignant story to shed light on the intricate bond between pets and their families during times of crises. Dr Ellen Jefferson, APA! President and CEO, emphasised the importance of supporting rescue efforts in Central Texas, highlighting the profound impact pets have as a connection to lost family members. The organisation is now urging animal lovers to assist by offering foster care and donations to aid their ongoing rescue operations.
For those situated near APA!’s shelter, fostering a displaced or lost pet can help create space for incoming animals in need. Monetary donations play a crucial role in covering medical expenses and supporting rescue missions. Additionally, APA! is in need of essential supplies like flea and tick medication, pet carriers, and potty pads to care for the animals affected by the floods.
