In the midst of the devastating floods in Central Texas, a young Coast Guard rescue swimmer, Scott Ruskin, emerged as a hero after saving 165 lives at Camp Mystic. The harrowing rescue mission took place on Friday, July 5, as the deadly flooding wreaked havoc across the region. Ruskin, a 26-year-old New Jersey native, was on duty at the U.S. Coast Guard’s Air Station Corpus Christi in Texas when the call came in for his team to respond to the unfolding emergency.

Despite facing challenging weather conditions that prolonged their flight time, Ruskin and his team finally arrived at Camp Mystic, a girl’s camp situated along the Guadalupe River. Ruskin was tasked with coordinating the rescue efforts at the camp, where he found himself as the sole first responder amidst around 200 scared and cold children, most of whom were having the worst day of their lives. With remarkable composure and determination, Ruskin quickly sprang into action to triage the children and ensure their swift evacuation to safety.

Working hand in hand with members of the United States Army National Guard, Ruskin orchestrated the evacuation of the stranded individuals by utilizing two different landing zones at the camp. He played a pivotal role in guiding groups of children and adults to the rescue helicopters, which transported them to a secure location with more first responders on hand. Despite having completed his rescue swimmer training just six months prior, Ruskin relied on his intensive training and skills to execute the high-stakes rescue mission.
During his appearance on Good Morning America, Ruskin humbly deflected the hero label and instead credited the children on the ground as the true heroes. He expressed admiration for their strength and resilience in the face of adversity, which inspired him to give his all in the rescue operation. As Ruskin reflected on the experience, he emphasised the critical role of the training received by Coast Guard rescue swimmers, acknowledging that his fellow responders would have exhibited the same level of professionalism and dedication.
Amid the aftermath of the catastrophic flooding at Camp Mystic, the full extent of the tragedy became apparent, with Camp Mystic confirming the loss of 27 campers and counselors in the floods. The devastation was further compounded by the news of additional individuals still missing and unaccounted for. The community, first responders, and officials rallied together to provide support and aid to the grieving families and affected individuals in the wake of the disaster.
Tragically, the death toll in the area continued to rise, with at least 82 people confirmed dead and others still reported as missing. As the region braced for ongoing rainfall, the US National Weather Service issued a flood watch urging residents to remain vigilant and prepared for any further risks. Despite the grim outlook, efforts to support the victims and aid in the recovery process from the Texas floods persisted, with various organisations and individuals coming together to offer assistance and relief to those in need.
In the face of unprecedented challenges and heart-wrenching loss, Scott Ruskin’s selfless actions and unwavering commitment to saving lives serve as a beacon of hope and resilience in the darkest of times. His dedication to duty and his profound humility in the face of adversity embody the spirit of courage and compassion that defines true heroism. As the community mourns its losses and grapples with the aftermath of the disaster, stories of bravery and solidarity like Ruskin’s shine brightly, reminding us of the indomitable human spirit that prevails even in the face of unimaginable hardship and tragedy.
