At 19, Annabelle Stafford-Johnson embarked on a life-altering journey that took her from a challenging battle with cancer to the lush landscapes of Cambodia where she now runs a thriving hostel. The Ireland native’s story is one of resilience, adventure, and unexpected opportunities that have shaped her path from a cancer diagnosis in her teens to entrepreneurial success in her 20s.
Annabelle shared with PEOPLE in an exclusive interview about her remarkable transition from undergoing chemotherapy treatment in her late teens to establishing herself in her 20s through extensive travel and business ventures. What started as a month-long trip to Greece after completing her lymphoma treatment turned into a whirlwind of global adventures that eventually led her to Cambodia. It was in Cambodia where she teamed up with three Australian friends she met during her travels in Greece to co-found The Wavy Sailor hostel.

The hostel, founded a year ago, has become a beloved spot for travellers of all ages looking for a unique and welcoming experience. Annabelle explained how the decision to start the hostel stemmed from a spontaneous trip to Cambodia with her friends in January 2024. Their visit to Koh Rong, an island known for its picturesque beauty, sparked the idea to establish their own haven for travellers seeking fun and connection.

Despite facing financial challenges, Annabelle and her friends took a leap of faith and invested all they had into setting up The Wavy Sailor. The process was filled with uncertainties and obstacles, but their determination and collaborative efforts paid off when they officially took over the hostel in April 2024. The venture has been a success, attracting a diverse range of guests and creating a vibrant community where people from all walks of life can come together to relax and forge new connections.
Annabelle described The Wavy Sailor as a hub for backpackers and adventure-seekers, welcoming guests to enjoy both lively parties and peaceful moments of relaxation. The hostel’s location in the heart of a Cambodian jungle adds to its charm, with wildlife encounters and stunning natural surroundings enhancing the guest experience. From monkeys to geckos, the hostel’s proximity to nature provides a unique backdrop for travellers looking to immerse themselves in a tropical paradise.
As the business thrives, Annabelle reflects on the personal growth and lessons she has gained from her entrepreneurial journey. Having bypassed traditional education to pursue her passion for travel, she acknowledges that the challenges and successes she has experienced have been invaluable in shaping her character and instilling confidence in her abilities. Despite facing uncertainties along the way, Annabelle remains optimistic and embraces the spontaneity of her entrepreneurial endeavours, finding joy and fulfilment in the process.
Looking ahead, The Wavy Sailor is gearing up for another bustling season after a brief hiatus during the low season. Annabelle, along with her business partner, is excited to continue building on the hostel’s success and creating memorable experiences for guests from around the world. The journey from cancer survivor to hostel entrepreneur has been a transformative one for Annabelle, exemplifying the resilience and determination that have defined her path to success.
