A former Army Ranger and father of two found himself in critical condition in an intensive care unit (ICU) in Miami after a terrifying incident while snorkelling in the Bahamas. Brent Slough, a 42-year-old from Prosper, Texas, was struck by a boat propeller on June 30 during a family vacation. The harrowing ordeal was recounted by Brent’s wife, Whitney Slough, who described how a boat suddenly appeared and struck Brent before fleeing the scene without offering any help.
Whitney shared with Dallas outlet WFAA that the boat showed no signs of stopping even after hitting Brent under the buttocks and legs, causing severe injuries. CBS News Texas reported Brent’s account of surfacing after the propeller strike only to witness the boat’s occupants glancing back before speeding off. The propeller’s impact was devastating, with Whitney describing it as nearly slicing off the lower half of Brent’s body, requiring immediate medical intervention.

Good Samaritans at the scene swiftly assisted Whitney in rescuing Brent from the water and providing first aid before he was rushed to a local hospital. Subsequently, arrangements were made to transfer Brent to a Miami hospital on July 1 for specialised treatment. In a four-hour surgery, doctors attended to Brent’s fractured pelvis and leg, as well as deep lacerations, with ongoing wound care due to the severity of his injuries. Despite the gravity of the situation, Whitney expressed gratitude for Brent’s survival and emphasised his unwavering faith in a purpose beyond their understanding.

Brent, a West Point graduate with a military service record, served for six years and completed a tour of duty in Iraq, highlighting his resilience and commitment. With Bahamian authorities on the lookout for the responsible boat and its crew, Whitney remains steadfast in seeking justice for her husband. She asserted the illegality of the boat’s proximity to the shore during the incident and vowed to pursue accountability, urging the culprits to come forward or face the consequences of their actions.
Support for Brent’s recovery efforts has poured in through a GoFundMe campaign initiated by a family friend to alleviate the financial burden of medical expenses. The fundraiser’s message encapsulates hope and solidarity, rallying contributions towards Brent’s treatment and the family’s journey towards healing. As donations continue to accumulate, exceeding $67,000 towards an $80,000 target as of the latest update, the community’s support underscores a collective commitment to aiding the Slough family during this challenging period.
Amidst the adversity faced by Brent and his loved ones, the outpouring of generosity and well-wishes serves as a beacon of light in their darkest hour. The resilience exhibited by the Slough family resonates deeply, embodying courage and fortitude in confronting unforeseen trials. As Brent embarks on his road to recovery, the spirit of unity and compassion surrounding him echoes a testament to the strength found in community solidarity during times of hardship.
