A YouTuber named Max Fosh has caused quite a stir online with his unconventional approach to obtaining a $50 refund from an airline. In a video posted on June 30, the British content creator shared the story of his elaborate plan to secure a reimbursement for a cancelled flight by faking his own death.

Fosh revealed that the airline’s policy only allowed refunds in cases where the passenger had passed away. Determined to challenge this policy on principle, the 30-year-old decided to take matters into his own hands. Despite the relatively small amount of money at stake, Fosh embarked on a mission to obtain a legal death certificate from a foreign principality.

In the video, which has garnered over 1.9 million views in just three days, Fosh explained his motivations for pursuing such an extraordinary scheme. “I am embarking on this mission because I’m incredibly petty … It’s the principle that I take issue with,” he candidly admitted to his audience.
After reaching out to various governments abroad, Fosh received a response from Seborga, a self-declared principality that operates independently with its own government and currency. With the help of the “Princess” of Seborga, Nina Menegatto, Fosh was able to obtain a special, one-off death certificate to support his claim.
In a statement to PEOPLE, a representative for Seborga confirmed the authenticity of Fosh’s visit and the issuance of the death certificate. They clarified that their cooperation with Fosh was purely for entertainment and content creation purposes.
To add credibility to his fake demise, Fosh even staged a mock funeral for himself, complete with hired mourners and a eulogy delivered by his editor. Despite his efforts to push the boundaries, Fosh eventually heeded legal advice and abandoned his pursuit of the refund.
In the closing moments of the video, Fosh reflected on the experience and cautioned his viewers against attempting similar tactics. His lawyer, who advised him throughout the process, emphasised the potential legal implications of the scheme, prompting Fosh to end his quest for reimbursement.
Fosh’s unconventional approach to securing a $50 refund has sparked a mix of reactions online, with many praising his creativity and determination, while others have raised concerns about the ethical implications of his actions. Regardless, his viral video has captured the attention of millions and reignited discussions around consumer rights and corporate policies.
