In a momentous occasion at the 78th Annual Tony Awards, the original cast of the hit Broadway musical Hamilton reunited, marking a decade since its debut. The star of the show, Renée Elise Goldsberry, who portrayed the iconic character Angelica Schuyler, shared her heartfelt reflections on how Hamilton has shaped her life.
Speaking on SiriusXM’s Smith Sisters Live, Goldsberry expressed her gratitude for being a part of a project that she describes as life-changing. She reminisced about the reunion, where she saw her cast members as family, and the joy of coming together once again to celebrate the musical’s 10th anniversary.
The reunion performance at the Tony Awards was a highly anticipated event that drew in a crowd at Radio City Music Hall, with more than two dozen original cast members reuniting on stage. Goldsberry, alongside Leslie Odom Jr., Daveed Diggs, and others, delivered a medley performance that was met with enthusiasm and celebration.
Sharing a humorous anecdote about revisiting the song ‘Satisfied’ from the musical, Goldsberry highlighted how the music of Hamilton now belongs to the world, transcending the original cast’s ownership. Despite the pressure of delivering a rap-heavy performance, she approached each rendition with care and reverence.
Ahead of the reunion, Goldsberry took to Instagram to express her overwhelming happiness, sharing behind-the-scenes moments with her castmates and describing spontaneous tears of joy bubbling up from her soul. The experience surpassed her wildest dreams, with the reality of the reunion exceeding expectations.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, the creator and star of Hamilton, also took to social media to share his journey of bringing the original cast back together for the reunion. Describing the process as a joyous one, Miranda expressed his delight at seeing his vision come to life and enjoying the moment with nothing to prove but everything to celebrate.
Since its premiere in 2015, Hamilton has made a significant impact on Broadway, revolutionizing the traditional musical theatre landscape with its innovative storytelling and eclectic music styles. The musical’s continued success has been reflected in its recent Diamond certification, a historic achievement for any Broadway album.
As the legacy of Hamilton endures, the reunion of the original cast serves as a testament to the lasting impact of the groundbreaking musical. With heartfelt reflections and joyous celebrations, the cast members came together once again to honour the cultural phenomenon that continues to resonate with audiences worldwide.
