A heartwarming rescue mission took place in Alaska as the Alaska Army National Guard swooped in to rescue a family of six, including a child and an elderly woman, after they spent close to 24 hours stranded on the Kuskokwim River. The dramatic incident occurred on Monday, June 30, with the family’s boat getting stuck on a sandbar amidst intense stormy weather.

The Alaska Army National Guard revealed that the family had become stranded near Tuntutuliak on the Kuskokwim River due to high winds and rough waters, making it impossible for local community efforts to reach them. As their phones were on the verge of dying, the family managed to send distress messages to the Alaska State Troopers (AST) before help arrived.

In response to the emergency call, Alaska Army National Guard aviators swiftly launched a UH-60L Black Hawk helicopter from the Bethel armory and embarked on a daring rescue mission. The team, led by Chief Warrant Officer 3 Nick Lime, encountered challenging conditions including heavy rain, fog, and gusts of up to 45 miles per hour as they located the stranded family.
Upon spotting the family after approximately 30 minutes of searching, the rescuers were alarmed to find the elderly woman in a particularly fragile state, barely able to move or communicate due to prolonged exposure to the elements. The entire family showed signs of hypothermia and were in urgent need of medical attention.
The AKARNG team wasted no time in evacuating the family to safety at Bethel Armory, where they were met by volunteers from the Bethel Fire Department and three ambulances ready to transport them to Yukon-Kuskokwim Regional Hospital. Pilot Bryan Kruse commended the seamless coordination between the rescue crew, volunteers, and local air traffic controllers, highlighting the importance of community collaboration in such critical situations.
Despite not being specifically equipped for rescues, the Bethel-based Black Hawk crew demonstrated exemplary professionalism and quick thinking in executing the mission successfully. Chief Warrant Officer 3 Bryan Kruse expressed pride in the team’s performance, emphasizing the importance of making the best use of available resources in challenging circumstances.
The heartening rescue of the family from the treacherous waters of the Kuskokwim River serves as a testament to the bravery and dedication of the Alaska Army National Guard personnel. Their swift and effective response undoubtedly saved the lives of all six individuals, showcasing the crucial role played by emergency services in safeguarding the community’s welfare.
The harrowing ordeal faced by the stranded family and their ultimate rescue highlights the unpredictable nature of Alaska’s wilderness and the vital role played by skilled professionals in ensuring the safety of those in distress. The heartening conclusion of this rescue mission serves as a reminder of the resilience and unwavering commitment demonstrated by emergency responders in the face of adversity.
