A former Colorado firefighter, Greg Durocher, has sadly passed away following a scuba diving lesson in Hawaii. Durocher, aged 51 and hailing from Castle Rock, lost his life after participating in scuba diving activities with his family at Waiolena Beach Park on Monday, June 30. The Hawaii Police Department confirmed his untimely death in a news release. It was reported that Durocher became unresponsive after experiencing difficulty breathing upon returning to shore, following approximately 38 minutes in the water. Despite efforts from the dive master and Durocher’s family to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on him at the scene, he was later pronounced dead at Hilo Benioff Medical Center.

Greg Durocher, before his tragic death, had a prominent career as a firefighter with West Metro Fire Rescue. Described as a well-respected member of the team with a strong dedication to child safety, he made a significant impact during his 13-year tenure with the department. Departing from his firefighting role in 2011, Durocher went on to establish his own company, Safe Ride 4 Kids. As the CEO of this business, he focused on providing products aimed at safeguarding children from injuries or fatalities in car accidents. Durocher’s commitment to ensuring the safety of young passengers reflected his heartfelt mission to empower parents in protecting their children.

The news of Durocher’s passing has deeply saddened his former colleagues at West Metro Fire Rescue. They expressed their condolences and shared their thoughts with Durocher’s family during this difficult time. Describing him as a passionate advocate for child safety, Durocher’s legacy continues through the work he accomplished, both as a firefighter and as an entrepreneur. Safe Ride 4 Kids, the company he founded, remains dedicated to promoting child safety on the roads and upholding Durocher’s vision for a safer future for all children.
As investigations into the circumstances surrounding Durocher’s death continue, authorities have not identified any foul play in connection with the incident. The Hawaii Police Department is conducting an ongoing inquiry, including a coroner’s inquest to determine the exact cause of his passing. While the tragedy is being treated as a possible accidental drowning, authorities are urging anyone with pertinent information to come forward and assist in their investigation by contacting South Hilo Patrol Officer Elieser Quinones.
Greg Durocher’s sudden and tragic death serves as a stark reminder of the fragility of life and the importance of safety measures, even in seemingly recreational activities. His dedication to child safety, evident in his career choices and entrepreneurial pursuits, leaves a lasting impact on those who knew him.
