A recent animal rescue operation in upstate New York has left the SPCA of Upstate New York with over 100 snakes and hundreds of rats in need of new homes. The animals were seized from a breeder in Queensbury earlier this year due to neglect, with the court case progressing to a stage where the shelter can now start the process of finding suitable families for these creatures.

The partnership between Warren County and the SPCA has been crucial in providing necessary care for these rescued animals as they recover from their ordeal. SPCA director Cathy Cloutier described this operation as one of the largest she has encountered in her 27-year career in animal welfare.
The snakes, including boa constrictors, pythons, corn snakes, and king snakes, have been temporarily housed in cages at the SPCA, while the rats, many of which had outgrown being fed to the snakes, occupied a dedicated space in the shelter. At the time of confiscation, the snakes were found to be infested with mites, a condition that could have been fatal if left untreated. Thanks to the efforts of two dedicated staffers, the animals received treatment and are now on the path to recovery.
Without the intervention of the SPCA, Warren County officials would have been faced with the challenge of handling these animals on their own. The county’s established contract with the SPCA helps alleviate the burden on the community and ensures that animals in need receive the best possible care.
Individuals or institutions with experience in caring for reptiles, such as zoos or animal exhibits, are being considered as potential adopters for the snakes and rats. Those interested in providing a forever home for these animals can contact the SPCA at (518) 798-3500.
The support and dedication of volunteers and staff at the SPCA have been instrumental in addressing cases of animal cruelty and neglect. This recent operation highlights the importance of community involvement in animal welfare and the positive impact it can have on the lives of rescued animals.
As efforts continue to find suitable homes for these snakes and rats, the SPCA remains committed to ensuring that each animal receives the care and attention it deserves. By working together with the community, they aim to provide a brighter future for these creatures who have endured neglect and mistreatment.
In a heartwarming display of compassion and resilience, the SPCA and Warren County are rallying together to give these animals a second chance at a happy and fulfilling life. Through adoption and support from the community, these snakes and rats have the opportunity to thrive in environments where they will be cared for and cherished.
