A mother’s intense fear of flying led her family of seven on a unique travel adventure across Europe, opting for a 30-hour train journey instead of a flight.

Cecilia Hellgård Call, a 56-year-old full-time dental hygienist from California, has battled severe aerophobia throughout her life, causing her to avoid air travel except for her annual trip to Sweden to visit family.

Cecilia’s daughter, Gemma Call, shared in an exclusive interview with PEOPLE that her mother’s fear of flying is so extreme that turbulence can trigger physical reactions like nausea and anxiety. Cecilia even tracks flights online when her children fly to ensure their safety.
Despite being prescribed medication to calm her nerves, flying remains a daunting experience for Cecilia, who only flies with trusted airlines like KLM, Delta, or British Airways, ruling out budget carriers entirely.
The family’s recent European adventure took them through Denmark, Germany, Spain, France, Italy, and Switzerland via train, allowing them to explore different cities along the way, something they appreciate about land travel.
While the journey by train was long and required meticulous planning, it gave Cecilia the opportunity to see the world without the added stress of flying, providing a positive experience for her and her family.
Cecilia’s advice for others facing a similar fear is to continue flying, as over time, it may become more manageable. Her story serves as an inspiration for those dealing with phobias and anxieties when it comes to travel.
The Call family’s decision to embark on this journey demonstrates their strong bond and dedication to accommodating their mother’s fear, showcasing the importance of support and understanding within a family unit.
Despite the challenges faced due to Cecilia’s fear of flying, the family’s European train adventure was filled with new experiences, bonding moments, and a sense of accomplishment for overcoming obstacles together.
