Pop sensation Lorde recently shared a shocking experience with the NYPD’s antiterrorism unit during an appearance on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert. The singer, known for hits like “Royals,” detailed her run-in with law enforcement while trying to shoot a music video for her latest single, “What Was That?”
During her interview with Colbert on the episode that aired on Tuesday, June 24, Lorde recounted how her plans to film in Washington Square Park were abruptly halted when a large crowd gathered following her Instagram Stories post. The NYPD intervened, with the antiterrorism unit warning Lorde that she could face arrest for inciting a riot if she stepped foot in the park.
Despite the intense encounter, Lorde later returned to the park to film the video, with limited time and resources to spare given the video’s impending release. The NYPD’s presence posed a challenge, with the singer acknowledging their impact on the shoot.
Responding to the incident, the NYPD issued a statement citing the lack of permits as the reason for shutting down the gathering in the park. According to a spokesperson, regulations require sound and park permits for hosting events in New York City parks, which the organizers had failed to obtain.
Despite the initial setback, Lorde managed to keep her commitment to fans by performing “What Was That?” in the park later that evening. Videos captured by attendees showed her expressing gratitude towards the crowd for their support.
In addition to discussing the park incident, Lorde reflected on the creative process behind her upcoming album, “Virgin.” She likened making an album to embarking on a quest, a journey filled with discoveries and questions that ultimately lead to artistic expression.
As the release date for “Virgin” approaches on Friday, June 27, fans eagerly anticipate the new music from Lorde. The singer’s resilience in overcoming obstacles during the production of her music video showcases her dedication to her craft and passion for connecting with her audience.
Stay tuned for more updates on Lorde’s music journey and upcoming album release. The singer’s bold storytelling and introspective lyrics continue to captivate audiences worldwide, cementing her status as a true artistic innovator in the music industry.
