A lifeguard stationed at Asbury Park’s 3rd Avenue Beach in New Jersey had a terrifying experience when she was impaled by a beach umbrella during a powerful gust of wind. The incident occurred on the morning of Wednesday, June 25, as the lifeguards were setting up the beach for the day. John Bongiovanni, an Asbury Park beach safety supervisor, recounted that as the lifeguard was trying to secure the umbrella, a sudden gust of wind lifted it up. In an attempt to grab hold of it, the umbrella blew back towards her, piercing her upper left shoulder and coming out through her back.

The beach umbrella, approximately 6 feet in length, was reported to have protruded about a foot through the lifeguard’s shoulder, leaving her in a precarious situation.
