When the Emergency Animal Medical Technicians (EAMT) arrived on the scene alongside officers from the Phoenix Police Department, they found a pit bull terrier named Rainbow Brite tied up outdoors in scorching 99-degree weather. The mama dog had been painted with multi-colored spots, resembling a leopard.

Rainbow Brite, a 5-year-old American pit bull terrier, was found with her nine puppies tethered outdoors in extreme heat. The temperature in Phoenix that day was a scorching 99 degrees, with the concrete sidewalk reaching a staggering 133 degrees. The shelter’s EAMTs immediately took action to rescue Rainbow Brite and her puppies from the harsh conditions. Rainbow Brite’s owner decided to surrender her and the puppies to the Arizona Humane Society, as they could no longer care for them.
Upon arrival at the Lazin Animal Foundation Trauma Hospital, Rainbow Brite’s condition was assessed. The mama dog had an alarmingly high body temperature of 105.7, which was brought down to 102.5 using cool towels. Veterinarians also noted that Rainbow Brite was underweight, a concerning issue for a nursing dog. The shelter’s staff worked diligently to stabilise Rainbow Brite and ensure the well-being of her litter of puppies.
After receiving necessary veterinary care, Rainbow Brite and her nine pups were transferred to the Arizona Humane Society’s “Mutternity Suites,” a dedicated space for pregnant and nursing dogs. The shelter shared a heartwarming TikTok video showcasing Rainbow Brite nursing her puppies and enjoying treats in her new environment. The video garnered over 75,000 views, drawing attention to Rainbow Brite’s unique appearance and heartwarming story.
The Arizona Humane Society plans to make Rainbow Brite and her puppies available for adoption once they are ready. For now, the canine family is being cared for by a foster family until they are spayed, neutered, and vaccinated. The shelter emphasised the dangers of leaving dogs outdoors in extreme heat, advocating for responsible pet ownership and highlighting the risks associated with tethering pets in adverse weather conditions.
