Federal authorities have disclosed haunting content from text messages that were allegedly sent by the suspect behind the shooting of Minnesota lawmakers to his family. The suspect in question, Vance Boelter, received a $5 million bail during his initial court appearance on Monday.
Vance Boelter is the key figure in the investigation, with accusations pointing towards him for the fatal shooting of a state lawmaker and her spouse. Additionally, another lawmaker and his wife were wounded in the incident. According to reports, the suspect sent cryptic messages to his family members while evading authorities.
In these text messages, Boelter mentioned that his father had engaged in a conflict the previous night and refrained from providing further details to avoid implicating anyone. The 57-year-old suspect was apprehended after a two-day statewide manhunt and was presented in court on Monday where a bond of $5 million was set for him. Reports suggest that Boelter is accused of not only fatally shooting State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband but also attacking State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife – albeit, the latter survived the assault.
During a news conference, Acting U.S. Attorney Joseph Thompson disclosed that the suspect had visited the homes of four different lawmakers on the day of the incident. Additionally, State Sen. Ann Rest confirmed that the suspect had been parked outside her residence on that fateful day, expressing gratitude towards the swift actions of law enforcement.
Governor Tim Walz labelled the act as a “politically motivated assassination” after it was unveiled that Boelter had impersonated a law enforcement officer during the attacks. Although the suspect was met with gunfire at Melissa Hortman’s house, he managed to evade capture initially but was later arrested on Sunday following a tip-off.
Law enforcement officials confirmed that Boelter was armed at the time of his arrest. Prior to the arrest, a manifesto containing a list of names was discovered in a vehicle thought to have been used by the suspect. The vehicle was designed to resemble a police squad car, equipped with emergency lights.
Authorities stated that they are currently exploring the possibility of a broader network involved in the crimes. However, Superintendent Drew Evans clarified that there haven’t been any indications of accomplices at this point in time.
