A tragic incident unfolded on a North Carolina beach as a “critically endangered” horse was fatally struck by an SUV driver who was allegedly under the influence. The horse, named Alexander, was a 5-year-old stallion belonging to a threatened population, according to the Corolla Wild Horse Fund (CWHF).

Authorities were alerted to the collision between the vehicle and the horse at the county’s milepost 19 checkpoint on the morning of June 14. The Currituck County Sheriff’s Office (CCSO) responded to the scene where Alexander had been “killed on impact” after being hit by a Chevrolet Tahoe driven by 26-year-old Shannon Seamster. Seamster was subsequently arrested for driving while impaired (DWI) and was issued a $2,500 secured bond.
