Silentó, the Atlanta-based artist widely known for his hit single “Watch Me (Whip/Nae Nae),” has been sentenced to 30 years in prison for the killing of his cousin, Frederick Rooks III, which occurred in January 2021. The rapper, whose real name is Ricky Lamar Hawk, pleaded guilty but mentally ill to voluntary manslaughter, aggravated assault, possession of a firearm during a crime, and concealing Rooks’ death. DeKalb County District Attorney Sherry Boston made the announcement on June 11, revealing the details of the sentencing by DeKalb County Superior Court Judge Courtney Johnson.

The tragic incident unfolded when DeKalb County Police officers responded to a call at around 3:37 a.m. on January 21, 2021. Upon arrival at the intersection of Deep Shoals Circle and Corners Crossing in the Panthersville area, they discovered Rooks with multiple gunshot wounds. Despite the efforts of emergency medical services, Rooks was pronounced dead at the scene, with 10 bullet casings found near his body. It was reported that Hawk and Rooks were last seen together, with security footage capturing Hawk’s white BMW SUV fleeing the area following the sound of gunfire.
Following his arrest, Hawk confessed to the shooting on February 1, 2021. His PR manager, Chanel Hudson, released a statement requesting prayers for Hawk, highlighting his ongoing struggles with mental health issues. Hudson emphasised the need for support and positive energy for Hawk and his family during this challenging time. Prior to the tragic incident involving Rooks, Hawk had faced legal trouble in August 2020 when he was arrested and charged with two counts of assault with a deadly weapon for allegedly attacking two individuals with a hatchet in Los Angeles.
