An 18-year-old man tragically lost his life after slipping and falling over a 50-foot waterfall in Washington state. The incident took place at Sol Duc Falls in Olympic National Park on June 8, according to the National Park Service (NPS). Witnesses reported that the young man slipped while navigating the rocks at the top of the falls, leading to his fatal plunge. The victim resurfaced briefly at the base of the waterfall before disappearing underwater again, where park rangers later discovered his submerged body pinned between the first and second falls.

Efforts to locate the young man began immediately after his fall, with swiftwater and rope rescue teams combing the area while using thermal imaging technology to search the water. A ground team also scoured the riverbanks upstream from the trailhead. Despite their best efforts, the victim could not be saved. The following day, the park ranger found the body submerged at the falls. The search and recovery became a challenging task due to various factors, including treacherous cliffs covered in algae and moss, a second waterfall downstream, and elevated river flows caused by recent warm temperatures and rapid snowmelt in the region.
Multiple agencies, including Forks Ambulance, Forks Swiftwater, Olympic Ambulance, and various police departments, collaborated in the search and recovery mission. The victim’s identity has not been disclosed to the public at this time. Sol Duc Falls’ vicinity was temporarily closed to facilitate the recovery operation. The topography of the area, including cliffs, water hazards, and narrow canyons, compounded the difficulties faced by rescue teams. Sol Duc Valley, where the tragedy occurred, is situated in the northwestern part of Olympic National Park, just a short drive from Port Angeles. The trail leading to Sol Duc Falls spans approximately 0.8 miles and offers visitors multiple vantage points to observe the cascading waterfall.
