Kiyan Anthony, the son of renowned basketball player Carmelo Anthony and well-known television personality La La Anthony, is not exempt from feeling embarrassed by his parents despite their celebrity status. In an exclusive interview with PEOPLE, the 18-year-old Kiyan shared, “Oh, they still do [embarrass me]. They post a lot of videos that I don’t want them to post.” Reflecting on his experience on Instagram’s Close Friends Only podcast with his father, Carmelo, Kiyan admits, “But it’s all good. It’s all jokes.”

Acknowledging that his parents see him more than anyone else, Kiyan elaborates, “They got all the funny videos of me, and sometimes they like to troll and post it.” As Kiyan prepares to begin his freshman year at Syracuse University in the fall, where he will be playing basketball – his father’s alma mater, La La is reportedly finding it difficult to come to terms with his impending move. Kiyan reveals, “She’s already crying every day,” as he explains his efforts to spend quality time with her before leaving for college.
While La La Anthony, aged 42, is dealing with the emotional challenges of Kiyan’s transition to college, Carmelo Anthony, aged 41, plans to be more involved by shuttling between school and home. Kiyan expresses his anticipation and gratitude at following in his father’s footsteps at Syracuse, where Carmelo achieved monumental success by winning the NCAA championship in 2003. He describes the opportunity as immensely meaningful, stating, “It means a lot. It actually means everything.”
Discussing the significance of his decision to attend Syracuse, Kiyan affirms, “That was a huge part of my decision to go to Syracuse, so him being over there twenty-something years ago and then me coming, trying to follow his footsteps definitely means a lot, and I’m looking forward to see what comes with it.” In a podcast episode with Carmelo, Kiyan sheds light on the ‘Close Friends’ feature on Instagram, emphasizing the importance of exercising caution in what is shared on social media. Understanding the implications of his posts, Kiyan underscores the advice his parents give him: “Just don’t pay no attention to that and just stay focused,” particularly when faced with online rumors.
As a young individual in the public eye due to his parents’ fame, Kiyan is accustomed to encountering speculations about himself online. Despite the various falsehoods that circulate, Kiyan remains steadfast in his focus, crediting his parents for guiding him through the challenges. Sharing insights into his social media practices, Kiyan mentions that he selectively grants access to his exclusive daily Stories to his closest friends, prudently choosing individuals he can trust. By prioritizing privacy and mindfulness on social platforms, Kiyan navigates the digital space with resilience and discretion.
In a world where scrutiny and misinformation abound, Kiyan’s unwavering determination and familial support serve as pillars of strength as he embarks on his collegiate journey. As he steps into a new chapter at Syracuse University, the legacy of his father’s triumphs casts a guiding light on Kiyan’s aspirations and pursuits. With a blend of humility and ambition, Kiyan Anthony stands poised to carve his own path while honouring the rich legacy entrusted to him by his esteemed parents, Carmelo and La La Anthony.
