A man has been charged with DUI after a boat he was operating crashed and burst into flames off the coast of Hart Island in the Bronx. Joshua Brito, 33, faces three counts of operating a vessel while under the influence of alcohol or drugs following the incident on the evening of Saturday, June 7. The boat reportedly caught fire, resulting in nearly two dozen injuries.

According to a criminal complaint obtained by PEOPLE, officers noted that Brito had watery eyes and emitted a strong smell of alcohol from his breath. Brito allegedly confessed to driving the Carver 35 yacht and claimed to law enforcement that he had only consumed “one beer.” He also mentioned that he had picked up the group at World Fair and revealed previous issues with the boat, saying, “I had an issue with the boat two days ago. I disconnected the generator.”
Video footage circulating on social media captured the dramatic scene of the large boat engulfed in black smoke as it floated in the Long Island Sound. Emergency responders, including the NYPD’s Harbor Unit, Aviation and Drone Team, and the New York Fire Department (FDNY) and EMS, swiftly reacted to the situation. Three individuals were rescued from the water, while nineteen others managed to swim to safety on Hart Island.
The cause of the boat catching fire remains unclear, with investigations ongoing. It was disclosed that Brito’s blood alcohol content measured at 0.05 when tested at Jacobi Hospital around 10 p.m., as per the complaint.
