The documentary sheds light on the close bond Tom shared with his late father, Robert Daley, who tragically passed away at just 40 years old when Tom was a teenager of 17. The loss of his father left Tom feeling adrift and alone, especially in a sport like diving that they once shared as a passion. Tom found himself struggling internally while trying to maintain a facade of strength externally for years, until he met Dustin Lance Black in 2013.

According to Tom, meeting Dustin changed his perspective on vulnerability. He learned that it was okay to show his true emotions and that diving didn’t have to be the sole defining factor of his identity. Dustin became Tom’s rock, providing him with the safe space he needed to open up about his grief and struggles after his father’s passing due to brain cancer in 2011.

In the aftermath of his father’s death, Tom found solace in diving by immersing himself in the sport, using its demanding nature as a distraction from his pain. However, through his journey with Dustin, Tom learned the importance of addressing his emotions and seeking support from loved ones, rather than internalising everything.
After publicly coming out as bisexual in a YouTube video in 2013, Tom and Dustin tied the knot in 2017. Their relationship has been a source of strength for Tom, especially during challenging moments like the 2016 Rio Olympics, where he felt crushed by expectations. Despite not achieving his desired gold medal, Dustin’s words of encouragement helped Tom see beyond the immediate disappointment and focus on the bigger picture of his life and legacy.
The couple later expanded their family through surrogacy, welcoming two sons – Robbie in 2018 and Phoenix in 2023. Their journey culminated in a golden moment at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, where Tom and his partner Matty Lee clinched the gold medal in synchronized diving. Tom retired from professional diving in 2024, ending his illustrious career with a total of five Olympic games and an impressive collection of medals.
Reflecting on his experiences, Tom expressed gratitude for finding a partner like Dustin who helped him navigate life’s ups and downs with grace. The documentary “1.6 Seconds” offers viewers a glimpse into the emotional and triumphant journey of Tom Daley, showcasing the power of love, resilience, and the unwavering support of a devoted spouse.
The film is now available streaming globally, offering audiences a touching and inspiring look into the life of an Olympic champion and the unwavering love that helped him overcome adversity.
